sign on the 1/20

Postby defy1 » Sun Apr 02, 2017 3:50 pm

Thought I'd go to the nongs and do some laps of the 1/20, noticed a sign saying 'Cyclists not allowed past this point", a little bit up after the traffic lights. Anyone know whats the deal with that? Does it have to do with the roadworks further up?

I'd suggest pulling it down. The local council wouldn't put it out (unless they want to get slaughtered) so its likely a disgruntled resident.

The single lane isn't made any worse by cyclists (its only a very short stretch), so I see no reason for it.

Rip it down and replace with a "No bogans" sign.

What roadworks further up?
I was there last weekend, didn't see any sign?
The traffic lights at the land slip seem well geared for cyclists, last quiet a long time.

its basically here on the right hand 50kmh sign
https://www.google.com.au/maps/(AT)-37.857 ... 312!8i6656

its actually a properly made sign by a printing shop, with bicycle logo crossed out, so I thought it was official notice.
there is roadworks, with one way traffic lights, about 1km from the finish line

Oh, down that low in the basin. I miss understood your original post. Thought you ment the sign was after the land slip.

Disregard it, its a public road with land slip/single lane with traffic lights further up. No reason you cant ride up there. As said, traffic lights have a long duration, so plenty of time for even the slowest climber to get through.
Unless you're going for a PB and get stopped for a red light lol.

It's bullsh#t - ignore it. Probably put up by some smartarse locals who think the road is their personal driveway. I'd be very surprised if it has any official status.

I actually know a few of the locals who think cyclists should not ride in the Dandenongs "because it's too dangerous for cyclists".
One of these clowns likes to ride his motorbike around the Nongs at high speed whenever he feels like it, but he reckons that is "perfectly safe 'cos I know what I'm doing".

Basically they don't like having to wait a few seconds until they can pass safely. The usual nonsense.

Around this time last year when the Ascent ride was pending in the Dandenongs, there was hysteria amongst a small section of the local community. The most ridiculous comment I read was that were people were afraid to drive at the weekend because they were so worried about having to overtake cyclists on blind corners - you'd have to question why these people are 1. allowed a driver's license and 2. are in such a hurry that they have to overtake on blind corners.

If it is so, then it`s not a legal sign and it should be ignored. Pull it down as it might have been put up by an a$$hole.

^ Thanks for the pics, defy1. :)

It`s not a legal sign. But it might be put up by road works contractor.

It should have the wordings/explanations of why is bicycles not permitted in work zone areas ahead.

So, it`s a invalid sign and on wrong side of road as it`s supposed to be on the left side.

*Trust me - that sign is totally bogus, and no contractor or agency would put it up.

There's always someone, or some group.

VicRoads introduced a curfew on trucks using Rosanna Rd and Waterdale Rd to access the Ring Rd from the Eastern Fwy. Signs went up, with a second beneath exempting Trucks up to 4.5 ton. Some wag has been covering them up with plastic garbage bags. Repeatedly....I know because I've been taking it off, just to rile them  Not giving up, these folks.

I would submit this picture to the knox council if the sign is still there on the side of the road. As others have said it is an illegal placement.

Possibly the work of the same ar$ehole that threw tacks on the same stretch about a year ago.

Nothing to worry about. The sign was gone over the weekend. The tacking was a brief and pointless prelude to the "Ascent" ride that Bicycle Network routed up the 1 in 20 last year. It'll take more than somebody taping a sign up to stop the cycling up there.
