Im going over soon for the weekend with the girlfriend. Plan on visiting a couple of bike stores and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions? Only thing is i wont have a car so it would have to be in the city or possibly in St Kilda ( girlfriend wants to go down there).

iRide on King St are good, pity Spoke(n) and SHM are no more.

Get along to Flinders St Station. Catch any eastern line train (to Belgrave, Lilydale, Glen Waverley, Dandenong, Frankston or Sandringham) and go one station to Richmond. Get off here and go out to Abbotsford Cycles on Swan Street (just under the station entrance)

Great shop for bike touring parts and advice.

Go back into the station. Catch a Sandringham train. Get off at Balaclava. Walk west along Carlisle Street towards the bay for about 1 km to Barkly Street. Go to 150 Barkly Street - St Kilda Cycles.

Great shop for touring bikes, city bikes and related componentry.

Two great shops that are very easy to get to.

In between there is also The Freedom Machine on Chapel Street Prahran.

I've heard nothing but good things about Abbotsford Cycles and a big +1 for Ross at iRide, but I'm not sure he's open on the weekend.

Abbotsford Cycles don't sell new bikes, but specialise in servicing, repairs, Audax rides, parts and accessories, and keeping old bikes on the road.

100m from Abbotsford Cycles around the corner is Total Rush for a Specialized bling fest.

On your walk along Carlisle Street to St Kilda Cycles, you will pass Spoke(n) (Corner of St Kilda Road). The website doesn't say they've closed down. Have they?

Head south down to the bottom end of Barkly Street , turn left into Glenhuntly Road, and in a few hundred metres you'll come to Uno Cycling Sports Clothing, Elwood.

From here, it's just a short ride/ walk east to St Kilda Road bike lane or Elsternwick train station to the City. You could vear off these to the right/north at Chapel Street/Windsor station and visit Freedom Machine and Melbourne Bicycle Centre, both in Prahran.

Continue north up Chapel/Church Streets, and you're back in Richmond, or catch the train at Prahran or South Yarra.
