Mount Dandenong Tourist Road - Closure for Burning April 21

Postby AUbicycles » Fri Apr 20, 2018 4:47 pm

For bike riders around or heading to the Dandenongs, I have information of a closure due to planned burning.

------

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) will be conducting a planned burn adjacent to the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road at Montrose tomorrow, Saturday 21st of April from mid-morning (map below shows the location of the burn).

Traffic management on this section of road travelling uphill will be holding and escorting vehicles passed the burn area, but due to the dangers posed by smoke, radiant heat, and live embers, we have determined that it is not safe for bicycles to travel through this area.

Bicyclists travelling downhill towards Montrose will be diverted with other traffic up Inverness Road to York Road in Mt Evelyn.

We would greatly appreciate if you could pass this information through your network and on social media to reduce the inconvenience experienced by riders. We appreciate Mount Dandenong Tourist Road is a popular destination for riders, particularly at the weekend and are sorry for any disruption this may cause. The safety of bicyclists, other road users and our crews is topmost in our mind.

As with all planned burning, there is always a chance that the burn have to be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are unfavourable. Up to date information about planned burns can be found here: www.ffm.vic.gov.au/plannedburn

I cycled up Inverness on Saturday morning and there were dozens of CFA folks congregating in the forest just at the really steep bit in the last 500m preparing to start the burn. I shudder to think how bad it would have been cycling up there with smoke in your lungs given how gnarly that bit is at the best of times!

I had some friends caught up in this unaware before they started ascending the tourist road. The traffic controllers told them they weren't allowed through because bikes are just too slow. Nothing about the fire danger. :?

To be fair, there were signs up all over the place about the planned burn and smoke over the road on Saturday morning. There have also been those portable light up signs all over the Dandenongs in recent weeks advising when there are planned burns underway. I'm surprised they even let cars through, I saw some footage from a car during a recent burn and the entire roadside is burning away while cars go past - seems very dangerous.

Having said that, you'd be going down Inverness to get to York Rd...

The oddity of the phrasing is in the fact that travelling from Tourist Rd to York Rd is decidedly down, not up.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

But if you hold your map with north pointing to the top (as you should) it's 'up' to York Rd. :D
