G'day Dion,

Straight up Creek Rd, then right into Wynnum Rd. Left into Murarrie Crit Track (and do some threshold intervals for a while if I'm feeling motivated.... :wink: ). Then over the railway line and along Queensport Rd to Lytton Rd - and then onto the Gateway path.....

That's the general plan. But in the first couple of weeks its pen, I'll try a few different approaches and see which is best in terms of traffic, shoulder quality, etc, etc....

Cheers,
Abby

So you can get from the intersection of Queensport and Lytton Rd to the bike track? That seemed a little unclear to me.

Word from the Airport BUG is June 27 as the opening date........ Here's hoping!!

Also - We are pushing really hard for a link through from Schneider Rd to Viola. Trade Coast Developments ( who own the land) are opposed to it. We have BQ on side. I talked to the Council about it last week and they want the connection too, so hopefully we will win this one. Cross your fingers everyone!!

Cheers,
Abby

Great news on the Airport BUG. Do you go to the meetings? I know the CBD holds them during the day.

I remember some talk in the past of the airport banning bikes. I remember advising everyone to quit their jobs. Would I do that? Ofcourse I would. So, anyway, a BUG is a big improvement from a ban. I know the cause was safety concerns and I appreciate that, so good luck with that path link. Things have obviously improved.

I'm going to use this aswell. I start at Northgate at 6.30am and was thinking of riding the roadie at least once a week for some of those, uh, threshold intervals, was it you called them. Sounds ugly, but I'm keen enough - I suppose. Might even throw in a couple of follow ups around Nundah on the way past.

I wrote, of all the stupid things;
I'm going to use this aswell.
Well, I rode there and did an over and back, exploring my supposed new way to work. What can I say:
The approach - total crap. A planning brain fade.
The path - no posted speed signs that I saw?? A death waiting to happen.
The options - there are none. This path dumps you in the middle of nowhere and nowhere is about it.

This path is crap. Another nowhere to nowhere Brisbane bike path. How much intelligence does it take to realise that this should have been a link from the Bulimba Creek path to the Michelton - Redcliffe path. Is it that hard to figure out? And before people start talking about it costing too much, have a think about this. Yes, it would have cost more to get this right, but how much has it cost now? - and it's just crap. Absolute useless crap. How many more people would use it if it actual went from somewhere to somewhere? How many people would use it if they weren't dumped in a yard full of dumb arse semi trailer drivers at each end.

If you don't beieve, go and have a look at it. I don't blame you. I'm not sure I'd believe how bad this is if I didn't just see it.

Well done to BQ aswell.When it comes to organising kiddie rides and selling insurance, you're the G O for sure, but as a cycling advocate you are friggin' hopeless. If they didn't know how crap this was going to be, I'm not here and not a peep or a moan from them. Too scared to upset their cash supply, the state government. Get your act together or bugger off and stop wasting my tax money stumbling around like fools.

Back to the usual way to work for me.

Well, I parked at Murrarie Crit track, rode up Queensport Rd and crossed Lytton Rd at the lights, then onto the bridge.
There are yellow advisory signs, 10km/h. The lane is painted 2/3 bike, 1/3 peds. Plenty of people walking and riding, all keeping to their respective sides.
Other side of the bridge took a bit of figuring out. There is a bitumen bike track that leads to Schneider Rd. Once on Schneider Rd, we followed this for about 500 mtrs and found the turnoff to the bike track that leads to Nudgee Rd.
Some observations, I ride singlespeed and comfortably rode up the bridge sitting on 15.5 k's. There are 3 rest stops. There is a need for better signage, today there were just some MBC laminated signs, ziptied to posts, once you got off the bridge.

Excellent - thanks for the info.

So on the northern side, you ride from the bridge to SChneider Rd, and then its a dedicated bike track to Nudgee Rd? Where on Nudgee Rd does it end?

I'm hoping to ride the bridge this week sometime to try it as a commute to/from work.

It meets Nudgee Rd just north of the rail crossing.

I just saw on the news tonight, that the speed limit is 10k/h on the bridge.... :shock: you could just about walk faster than that. And they also said that they will have police enforcing the speed limit.

I rolled out easily to 55kph on both sides. I hope users' bosses don't mind them being late for work. Perhaps they can all get together and do bulk rim, pad and rotor buy ups. 10kph or a fine, LMAO. It just gets better.

It is not a "Speed Limit" it is written on a yellow sign which means it is "advisory" only.

I suspect you where watching Channel 7. I promptly rang them up and told them it was not a "Speed Limit" but an "Advisory" speed

This 10kmph things is definatly getting out of control.

I will load photos soon

Cyclists object to 10km/h speed limit on Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge

* Ursula Heger
* From: The Courier-Mail
* June 28, 2010 12:00AM

Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge

A SPEED limit of 10km/h for the new bike and pedestrian path on the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge has been given the thumbs-down by Brisbane cyclists.

Premier Anna Bligh opened the 3km path yesterday, saying the $36 million addition to the new Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge was worth the additional cost – finishing a missing link in the southeast's cycle paths.

Cyclists flocked to the bridge yesterday, saying it would provide a valuable link between north and south Brisbane.

But riders criticised the speed limit set for the bridge, saying it was "nonsensical" and would cause problems for cyclists trying to negotiate the steep decline.

"It is difficult to ride a bike that slowly – it is much easier to ride a bike at 20km/h than it is at 10km/h," CBD Bicycle Users Group cyclist Frank Kunde said.

Ms Bligh said the speed limit was necessary for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists using the strip.

"We want this cycleway to be safe and that means that cyclists do have to take care and travel at safe speeds," she said.

"There is no risk of going too fast when you are riding up it, it is quite a hill and it will test your legs.

"Coming down it, it is an equal challenge to stick to that safe speed limit, but we want this to be a place that is safe for cyclists and pedestrians."

Police would target riders who sped on the path, which links Lytton Rd to Kingsford Smith Drive.

"We have, from time to time, police out on the cycleways of Brisbane all over the place making sure that cyclists are sticking to the speed limit – so you never know – you might just be out here one morning and there's someone in blue taking your name," Ms Bligh said.

Pedestrians use the eastern side of the path and cyclists the western.

Brisbane is a town of cyclist haters...

10km/h on that bridge is even crazier than the coro drive bikepath. I'd be worried about blowing out a tyre from riding the brakes all the way down the hill.

I added my 2 cents worth on the couriermail article. There is definitely a lot of hate towards cyclists in Brissie. Sad really.

Well I think before you start answering Questions the Premier Anna Bligh needs to answer some because she was also exceeded the advised speed. Both going up and coming down.

Oh here is the ABC news report for it.
If you look over the News Readers shoulder on the still Image you see my other half and myself. :D
Hee Hee I'm on TV, :P again.

Anna says it's ok:
"There is no risk of going too fast when you are riding up it, it is quite a hill and it will test your legs.
Alrighty - I rode home on it, impressions:

- eagle farm end entrance is ok... but only because I work right across the road from where it is. It's probably a bit useless for 90% of people.
- bridge itself is alright. It's narrower than I would prefer, but it's also in the middle of nowhere, so it's probably ok. Incline isn't too bad, it's long though, I couldn't quite power through it, had to grind out the last bit. Should help me HTFU. Going down gives you plenty of time to recover though.
- Lytton rd end seems even more useless, it dumps you out really abruptly onto lytton rd. Was ok when I came out though, no traffic late at night.
