I'm racing myself to set a decent first time - my first Bris to GC, and my 4th 100km for the year. Considering riding back to bris seeing as i'm down there solo, all reports are that the afternoon tailwind helps a lot

1st goal is too make it, 2nd goal is to beat 4 hours, 3rd goal 3:45.

Cheers

i think there is a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. :(
also slippery roads and flat tyres.
there is also a certainty of heavy traffic and lousy drivers on the way back to brisbane. :(

sorry to be a pessimist but i will be staying on the coast or catching a train home. :P

I last rode it 2 years ago in my first year of cycling seriously and did a sub 3 hour ride. I'm aiming for a significantly better time for this effort.

The trick is to make sure you find a good bunch to attach yourself to and avoid getting isolated in the last 20 km's.

What do you mean by isolated? Do you mean dropped?

The bunch I was in had a huge stack which I got stuck behind and the guys in front of the stack got away. At the time I wasn't strong enough to bridge the gap so got to see the bunch slowly disappear up the road. There wasn't any other bunch that caught up with me so I did the last 20 solo until just before the coast.

Slept well that night :)

Wow, just received an email that'll help my trip time. I took the sponsorship on, harangued my friends, family and work colleagues until they put their short arms into their deep pockets and wound up amongst the top 15 fundraisers and therefore get to start in the sponsors area, toward the front of the pack. I have to send my Bib back as the Heart Foundation crowd will send me a new one.

Now that i think of it, that's a little off putting, a clip stack in front of a few thousand riders, at the start
And not many too wheelsuck from until the bunches start flowing past :)

Cheers

Well done to avoid the stack.

I too would be very happy with a sub 3. I'm hoping to do it in 4 or less including breaks but then I've never done it before so that may be completely unrealistic. If it's 100k and I average 30 or so It should be possible at 3:20. Any comments on this? Am I being unrealistic? How long do the support stops take?

Sorry for the questions but I've got to arrange a meet with my faithful support crew!

And on the way back the distance is shorter as you can stay on the old highway/service road at Pimpama and keep going back up to Yatala and forget the detour out to Jacobs Well.

There may well be extra cyclists out doing the return trip but I've ridden down the service road a couple of times and during the weekend it's fairly quiet apart from the big roundabouts at Yatala and around Beenleigh.

Does not mean you will have to put up with uptight people as we are all cyclist. "Cycle Challenge" can be what ever it means to yourself our chalenge is to beat the 3 hour mark but to enjoy it at the same time.

We work in a high stress job and this is a good outlet for us. I hope we all have a great day just enjoy take in the surroundings and have a chat.

I am looking at 3.15 for this ride, if a northerly which looks unlikely will be looking at a sub 3 hours. Should be fun, looking forward to the quick sprint south :)

It's going to be blowing a good south easter this weekend - 20+ knots.
That's a s**t of a head wind.
I'm going windsurfing.

<edit> Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as mean spirited. With 2000 bikes there are plenty of wheels to suck.
I hope you all have a great time.
I'll try and join you year.

I'm not sure where you got that info but the furthest out I found a forecast on BOM was S/SE 20/30 knots Friday.

If that's going on on Sunday it will be mega. That's like up to 50k of headwind  I wouldn't expect those strengths that early or on land but still 25kph would be possible. Youch.

I'll be watching this with interest.

Saw heaps of fixies last year - Winona (who occasionaly posts here :) ) did it last year in a crackin' time. Also saw a few of those push scooter thingies, expect to see a few more this year.

Hope you sort out the mech prob's but I reckon your old steelie would be fine on this ride :) :)

So long as I'm sucking someone's wheel, the headwind won't bother me one little bit!
