Hi All
I have just signed up for the Ride to Conquer Cancer being held next year on 20th & 21st August. Its a two day event 100k per day being held in the Somerset Region.
Anyone else planning to do the ride. You have to raise the funds to participate.
I haven't done anything like this before so the challenge is to get fit enough to be able to do this ride. My main motivation is I am doing it for my Dad who died 28 years ago from Cancer.
Its a great cause and would love any tips for training and for the ride.
this is the Website... if anyone would like to sponsor me send me a pm.

Hi
My partner and i will hopefully signing up for this soon. Ive been riding for 1.5yrs and she doesnt even own a bike yet!
but shes a tuff gal and im sure she'll be fine. Are you on the southside? Once i do a few training rides with her and get her confidence up, itd be good to do a few group rides with others signed up.
How have you been finding the fund raising side? Ive never done that before and raising $2500 sounds like heaps. Has anyone ever not been allowed to ride due to low donations?
Cheers
Rob

Hi
That would be great meeting up with someone doing the ride. I live down near Boonah but would be happy to drive up and meet somewhere. I believe you have to raise the money to participate I think that's why there is so much notice. I have started by printing off the cards that you can do and handing them around, I am going to ask my family to take some too and ask friends and work colleagues.
I did the pink tri a couple of years ago and nearly raised 2000 so this is a challenge for me too. I have been riding about 12 months on and off but never done a ride as far as this so its a huge challenge for me. Such a worth cause. I am also printing off letters and going to deliver them around town and ask the shops etc if I can put up a sign and leave cards for people to take.
It will be totally amazing to complete this ride.
If i come up with any other ideas i shall pass it on. I have emailed the guides and they are very helpful. I am hoping for an orientation day at Ipswich they are planning one.
Cheers
Elizabeth

I'm also thinking about joining but the fundraising minimum requirement is a concern, I did the MS Brissie to Bay earlier in the yr and rasied $1250 that was pretty much exhausting all options. Out of the 4000+ riders in that event, no more than 15 or so individuals would have raised more than $2500. Imagine how different the feel of the event would be with only 15 riders.

Also I'd hate to get money of ppl then not be allowed to participate, this is the first time they have run this event so they may be a little over ambitious in my opinion.
You didnt have to raise any money for charity to enter the Brissie to the Bay - so therefore most people didnt go that much out of their way to fundraise (if at all), as they didnt have to. So its rediculous to compare the B2B with the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
The Brissie to Gold Coast ride raised around $160,000, with no minimum fundraising or donation required. Compare that to the Sydney to Gong ride where participants have to raise a minimum of $250 each. Same amount of riders in both events - yet the Sydney to Gong ride raised around 3.8 million dollars
If you dont raise the minimum amount of $ you wont be able to ride - but your donations still go towards a worthy cause. You should see getting to ride as a bonus to helping people with cancer

There is a big difference between raising $250 and $2500, will be interesting to see how many get there.
My point was having to tell all the ppl who donated that in the end you didn't even ride would be ordinary for those affected.

You have totally missed my point that people tend to raise more money on charity rides when they have to.
The people who are donating to your total know that you have to raise $2500 to ride, and so do you. I dont see how anyone but you will be affected if you dont ride
If you are only in this for yourself then it probably not the best charity event for you.

Raising the $2500 is all part of the challenge and those who can achieve will have the great warm fuzzy feeling in the end.

Not about me at all far from it, I already make substantial donations, and am I big advocate for the work they do being in the medical industry myself. My point is if you read carefully, this is about excluding ppl from what should be a mass participation event, and it contradicts their marketing material, of which the $2500 isn't mentioned, wonder why? I think setting a minimum is sensible to cover marketing/operational costs (especially the TV adds) and salary for their marketing team compared to the MS ride where I'm guessing all of the organisation is performed by volunteers. Also as you said it motivates ppl to raise more money. If it was $250 as low as the Sydney to Gong ride then great, less people would be excluded, even if it had to be $550 or $1000 that would open the event up to more ppl.
In the end the numbers will speak for themselves.

Rob well said, I'm on the Southside and I'd be keen for any slow group rides.

I have in the past been involved with teams for these types of events and I am the only one who has registered for the Cancer Ride. The reason being none of them feel they can commit to raising that amount per individual, and know how hard it is based on their own previous experience, therefore that is 20+ riders that I know of who have decided not to participate. Collectively they raised about $12000 at the last event but as you can calculate the average was about $500. I'm happy to just personally contribute the difference if required to make the $2500 total, but the rest of the group aren't in that financial position. Are you participating?
The ride is not a mass participation event, - can you tell me how they contradict themselves? The ride isnt about numbers, get it out of your head that it is. A smaller amount of riders donating more money is easier to manage than a large group of riders donating a small amount. No one is being excluded, its up to you to be included. The $2,500 is quite clearly mentioned when you get the info pack or look at the website - its not like you are being forced to sign up before finding out about having to raise a minumum amount of money. There are plenty of other fundraising rides in SE Queensland, or you can make a donation to someone else riding.[/color]
yep numbers will speak for themself - it will be quality over quantity.
Have you actually read the info on the website? - 100% of the donations go straight to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Sponsors and your $50 registration fee cover the rest of the costs. Channel 10 are a major sponsor which explains why you see the ads on tv. Same as your entry to the MS ride just covers your entry and shirt.
This is what will make the ride special - because not everyone will be doing it.
Im unsure yet if I will participate - but if I dont, it will only be because of other committments, and I will make a donation to another rider.

you contradict yourself by agreeing with Rob.
Rob does sum it all up nicely though

I agree, it will not be a mass participation event, but not by design.
Yes I have read their promotional brochure, and website content.
As I said the numbers will speak for themselves, the amount raised will be heavily scrutinised by key stakeholders.
Sorry ppl are entitled to their view, and nothing you have said has changed that.

The only people who will scrutinise the total raised will be people like you from your armchair
Those that participate can truly say they were part of something special.
$2500 is not much compared to similar high profile charity rides eg:

Here are a couple of charity rides that fall within your fundraising capabilities:

Quality over quantity? a bit rich. pardon the pun. This is in addition to any government grant they recieve just to host the event might we all add. I have no real issue with them setting a target for potential fundraisers, but firstly, who really wants to part with their money at this time of the year, and secondly, if they set a target of $1K, Im sure theyd end up with just as much for a worthy cause.
I can see both points however. I dont know whats wrong with me either

Also not sure they're interested in the quality of money they raise, nice crisp $100 notes, if it was me, the quantity would be more important.
In your opinion $2500 is not a lot, and you may be able to raise that amount.
In my opinion it is substantial and this is a factor for a number of ppl deciding not participate, if you don't get that or think it's important fine, I can't really make it any simpler or clearer.

So you have already registered since yesterday when you said this? Good for you
I'm also thinking about joining but the fundraising minimum requirement is a concern
When you make defamatory comments about an event like this - expect some replies
Most people who are/are not doing the ride are refraining from whining about aspects of the ride.
And I will voice my opinion about whatever I like

I wish you did also, everyone else is participating on the post except you.
Just registered - good to see I stirred you enough for you to pull your finger out to do the same instead of moaning about having to raise 2.5k to participate
