Boy, I can't believe their 'solution' for the Shaw Rd pedestrian and cycle crossing.
in the pic below, the areas marked '1' are
"Feature landscaping to be prominently ornamental and native grasses with contrasting color to provide a visual indication of entering the Wooloowin area."
Man, this is so ill considered. This 'visual indication' blocks both shoulders, and will therefore force Shaw Rd commuter cyclists out into the heavy traffic flow vehicle lanes, which are horrendous in peak hour. I travel this section of Shaw Rd almost daily, and cannot believe yet another dangerous pinch point has been created by planners with apparently no experience riding bikes.

Kedron Brook Bikeway to the sea conditions report

I saw the World's Biggest Snake riding home last night. It was stretched across the whole width of the path. When I say "stretched", it wasn't actually stretched. Even all twisty, it was as long as the path is wide.

It was on the crest of the small hill coming away from the dog park in Alderley. I screamed like a little girl and somehow managed to avoid running over it. Phew!

There was a 2 foot red bellied black at the Nundah Crit this arvo. Spectators were absorbed in watching the Division 2 racing, then when someone called out snake, hahahaha. they looked down and you should have seen them run. I spent a few minutes escorting it away from the track, though if it had got on the track, I doubt any of the 40 adrenalin charged riders averaging 90 seconds a lap would have slowed down.

Just a few obstacles to avoid on the KBB today.

The Nundahdome is drying out nicely.

When the brook isn't under water at the moment the puddles are so big and there is so much mud and sand it's not a pleasant place to be. I'll be avoiding it on the road bike for a bit I think.

Also it's closed off under Gympie Road as of this afternoon. The rest of the bit I ride (Pfingst rd to Noble st) is rideable but a bit messy.

saw three snakes on KBB today. that's a record.
a 3 ft greenie brown one I presume was a tree or grass snake, but some browns can have that coloring too.
a 4 ft red bellied black.
a 3 ft black snake.
none of them was the slightest bit agressive, quite the opposite.
I presume the warmer weather, the water lying around, has increased the number of insects, ergo frogs and similar predators, on which the snakes are feasting.

there's still around 100 metres of 2-3 inch deep brackish water puddles over Boondall Wetlands trail. if you go slow, taking a good roadie through it shouldn't be an issue.

KBB from Grange to Nudgee Beach looking great this morning. Lots of people out and about from the odd group ride, to the 'into it' roadies through to the poodlers alike, all having a ball. There are some detours, mostly around Gympie underpass, but given what it looked like a week or so ago, i wasnt holding out much hope of a clear puddle free ride. There are two minor puddles, but all is clear.

Many bell deaf people, including one chap who clearly hadnt heard the multiple rings, who decided to jink to the right just as i was about to pass which sent me off on the grass..... but honest mistake and all was cool.

Not a big fan of BCC, but they do hook in for the KBB. Im surprised that so many of the huge puddles that do linger on this run, are all clear.

Just about the perfect weather as well.

Great update!

I saw them digging drainage trenches from the puddle prone sections around the football fields. I don't think they have done the biggest and most persistent ones near the Grange library turnoff but we should take all victories. :)

I saw one decently graded swale adjacent to the embankment near Crushers, just before the Casuarinas.... and this part of the path was clear and clean all the way through there, which is usually the last to be drained. Not a spot of water, dried mud or sand along there. The puddles i saw were on the other side of Gympie Rd underpass.

Nudgee Beach is a great mini destination as well.... to go from inner city to the laid back wilds of the egde of Moreton Bay along an almost completely car-free route is pretty special. Theres a great little cafe there with very friendly owners. Just not open on Tuesdays which has caught me out a few times.

And one more thing about KBB while im banging on about it... what other major bikeway, along a relatively safe route, can you find 3 semi-major shopping centres (Brookside, Stafford & Toombul)...Ok theres are probably heaps, but as a piece if vital infrastructure for those of us trying to ditch the car.... im impressed.

im done......

Yep... that's one of the reasons why I'd like to move adjacent to it one day. :)

Ducked out to Nudgee Beach this afternoon from Wilston, joining the KBBP behind the Grange Library.

Wow...havent been on there for a little while, maybe 3-5 weeks, but what a difference. Still a work in progress... a little bit of side track cyclocross'ing at a few stages, but coming along in leaps and bounds..

Biggest differences are the nearly completed Gympie Rd and Sandgate Rd underpasses. No more goat tracks, multi bridge crossings and dodging trucks. The landscaping is a little over the top, and where the path splits and heads up to the road, is a little confusing (emphasis on little), but now just a straight run. A few other spots they have new paths laid, but the horror (over emphasised ) bone jarring section just west of Gympie Rd lives on, although im sure that is on the cards for replacement.

i simply dont remember the Sandgate Road underpass without the safety fencing, or the site sheds.......all gone, and now a straight run path along there, adjacent to some serious Kedron Brook water way works / rock lining etc.

These major road underpasses were the worst bits, and they are almost 90% complete, and once the new planting and turf strike, will come up pretty well.

But, the down side i found is that a large proportion of the new concrete paths could have been laid and finished significantly better as a cycle infrastructure than they have been. They arch longitudinally in the laid segments, and join in a pronounced v-section at the tool/control joints, which is weird given that the formwork would have been level throughout. Its ok if your doing 10klm, but at 20-25 not that flash an experience, considering they were paying the money for new paths anyway...seems a shame. But they are going down wider, so more room for the increased ped/cycle traffic. The next move should be a centre line i feel. A very simple and effective behavior modifier.

The Shaw Rd crossing has been jooshed, with mediocre results. What were considerable road, kerbing and planting works, have only really added a slightly larger mid-road bay. The rest is fluff. It doesnt necessarily announce a crossing any more than previously, as 99% of the treatment is on the ground plane..... which you dont notice at speed. Ive seen all amount of whacky plans proposed, but a good old fashion pedestrian crossing is still the most effective option.

So all in all, fairly significant advances in a short period of time, adding to what is a sensational route in the first place.

The bit from the library turnoff to the bridge at the Stafford foot ball club is a bit of a mess at the moment. That's going to inconvenience lots of commuters until finished.

They have put a diversion down next to the creek with blue metal in places. I'll say it's not suitable for road bikes. I rode through there last night and it was a bit hairy. Would be fine on an MTB or hybrid with wider tyres. They do ask you to dismount... but it's quite a way to walk when you're hungry.

I went out there the week before last and I found it easier and safer (35mm tyres) to ride on the grass then try and ride on the gravel path.
I think shreaded rubber tyre mats would be more help in the future then putting down gravel. That way they could be reused but then again some sh*thead would proably nic them.

Molly, it's pretty much the reverse of this route: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/12458 or this one: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Nu ... via-Grange

Thanks Max, I found a similar map and thought that looked the best, seems to avoid major roads, just unfamiliary with the path through roma parklands and along the inner city bypass. Have to draw a mud map with all the turns!

First magpie strike of the season for me. On the pathway, near the Swinburne St, Gordon Park entry about 10am this morning.

Vicious chap; thought a kid had thrown a rock at me. Havent had a seemingly flush temple strike before, only ear nips. A little bit of claret, but mainly a monster headache now.

He come out of the large tree near the bridge, and seems to only target those on the outer side of path closest to the tree.

There is a relatively wide section of grass near then bridge, so suggest giving that tree a very very wide birth.
