Report from big Melbourne ride

Postby elantra » Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:36 am

So maybe the weather foiled the B2GC but it relented to allow me to do one of the Round the Bay rides here.
Actually I only did the 50 km ride but it was a sweet experience.
Mediocre weather was predicted but it turned fine and sunny so the shoes stayed dry. :D
Riding over the mighty Westgate bridge was only part of the attraction.
Otherwise it was a nice flat route via Willamstown to the turnaround at Altona
Finish was at a bike expo near the city.
Lots of yummy things to look at there maties. 8)
Anyway later in the day the thousands of tired riders came rolling in at the finish of the main event which was of course the 210 km Round the Bay ride.

this is what you see a lot of in Melbourne.

Fair dinkum there are squillions of these in melbourne.
This one is a very nice fixed gear but i suspect freewheel single-speeds are more popular now, for good reasons.
Melbourne is much flatter than brisbane, so there is much less need for low and high gear ratios.

Some general observations about melbourne, apart from the obvious about good food and shopping.
There are "fewer" bicycle lanes, but down there they are "proper" bicycle lanes, not just carparking lanes.
(The bicycle lanes are to the road side of sufficient roadwidth for carparking.)

+As a visitor to Melbourne, the first advice you get of course from locals is "avoid the tram tracks"
