Can I just say I reckon anyone that completed either the 100 or the 170 today is a total hero - no matter how long it took. That is a way harder ride than the Bris-GC IMHO

+1 At the 70 k mark I had thoughts of turning off and just finishing the 100, but silly me wanted to experience all those rolling hills.

My next ride is only a 40k MTB ride at Mt Joyce.. Amazingly I am actually looking forward to that now.

I would agree, Comedian, the roads are in poor condition for most of the way, then there are the hills! Be slighty easier if there wasn't that wind, though.

One good thing is that the 50k ride took a left hand turn at Rosewood, so you didn't have to deal with the wobbie riders....from my experience today all of the 100k/m riders were somewhat experienced, called out hazards etc and there weren't many crazy over-takers/Pro-tour wanna-bees.

At about the 70k mark I was glad for the repeats done on Mt Gravatt and the training rides out on the Redland Bay loop

Yep a huge day for me, after spending the night at the Rosewood Pub, the one that is haunted.
Things kept going bump in the night so we did not get much sleep.

I did see someone zoom past the pub at 5.45, presumably he was doing the 160 and had started early.
I drove to Ippy of course to start the metric ride and then soon passing through Rosewood again.
Soon after there was an injured cyclist on the road and people in attendance said they were having difficulty getting through to QAS with mobiles.
So I did a short ride back to Rosewood again and spoke to an officer at the Ambulance there.
Sincerely hope the injured person is not too smashed up but she definitely needed an ambulance quickly.

Soon after that my own health started to deteriorate, a gastric problem.
Not sure if it was the $5 Roast special at the pub the night before or eating the wrong breakfast cereal in the half-light before the ride or something else, but it was not conducive to a long ride.

So I limped across the finish line after just over 5 hours, not including some short stops and the emergency turnaround.
Not one of my better efforts, but overall a great event.
But next time I will not walk past the sausage sizzle at the finish line, that did finish me off and some of the carrotts from the night before decided it was time to go up not down right there and then

Hey guys,

Did my first 100k ride. Averaged 30kphs which took about 3h15min. I'm stocked as I wanted to hit that 30kph which was my target.

I managed the imperial century with virtually no specific training. That was a mistake, but I made it. (So, its a mistake I'm likely to repeat).

I took plenty of gels tho - easy energy. I found the road surface really the biggest challenge - hands & toes numb. I'm glad I used chamois cream though. My arse would be chaffed to pieces if I didn't.

Those hills outta boonah - that was hard. I got to the point where I couldn't get my heart rate up above about 60% of the max, so lowest gear & just grind it out.

I finished in a little under 7 hours - we left about 6:10 from memory. And I was in at 1:00pm. Last night was hard but I feel almost human today. Probably not ride til Wednesday though.

Now there's the BOTB Gran Fondo & Noosa Winter Festival century to go.

Criticisms: Parking was mental. Organisers didn't realise the bottom car park was full & kept waving drivers through. And they should have a big digital clock thing.

Other than that, brilliant ride.

I agree and well done to everyone. I still think last years Rainbow Ride was tougher, more longer climbs. Especially the 300 mtr beast at the 145km mark, that being mount Tomewin. This years Rainbow Ride doesn't include that climb and starts and stops at Byron. Overall that is a nice ride in the country, check it out.

I am a member of the Crouching Tigers outfit so you may have seen us with the distinctive jerseys.

One thing I'll take away from it was it was really tough when you were essentially solo. Having a bunch would have made it a lot easier. We did pick up bunches from time to time, but they would be either too slow, too fast, or they would dissipate on their own when there was a change in terrain.

Kind of noticed that. Keeping a bunch together is easy enough on easy gradients, but once the hills start it all breaks up. Some people can climb, some can't, and some can climb some of the time. But those hills are just bad. Not enough rest on the way down to prepare you to go up the next. So it's all round just exhausting.

The other thing I learnt too is having some one to chat too really makes the miles pass, but that only happened from time to time.

Hah. You just need to pick a more talkative riding buddy. Don't rely on any passing poms...

My choice of vehicle meant that I didn't spend much time near anyone.

I did pass a fellow on a recumbent trike and slowed for a chat for a little while. He was also doing the 100km ride. I finished in 3:06 with no stops (apart from a 20 second camera battery change). I had 3 litres of water and some salty snacks with me so I didn't need to restock.

A really good bunch of riders and perfect weather made the day
3:15 AND 31K average

My ride time was 3:56, taking 30min off last years time so i'm pretty happy with that. Stopped at the rest stops and just before the climb to lower the heart rate and have a banana and chatted to another bloke who had the same idea and at about 65km to stretch the back - one the the crouching tiger blokes asked if i was ok, wasn't you Dave? Was wishing for some bunches to tack onto the back of in the headwinds with no success though, but still enjoyed myself

It's tempting. Next year I might ride my velomobile from home (Toowong) to Ipswich for the start of the 100km ride and then ride home afterwards - that will total about 180km!

I couldn't justify doing the 170km ride if I needed to hire a van again to get the velomobile out there - seems a little silly

Good ride, Mick. Did you come down from Rocky just for the ride?

It was a really enjoyable day. No rider was left alone on the side of the road for more than a few minutes and everyone rode very carefully. Looking forward to next year!

Sure did. Came down last year as well - and both times for the Bris - GC

Excellent. I'll be at the Brisbane to Gold Coast ride later in the year too, in the Mango. I plan to turn around and ride back to Brisbane afterwards - hopefully arriving home before lunch!

Hi Guys

I'd like to say that I'm pretty stoked to have finished the 100mile (170k) course. I did zero endurance training and it showed. The course was very scenic and typical for country roads (bumpy). I even joked about breaking a spoke on the lumpy terrain, and as it turns out, when I returned to my car I actually had a broken spoke (nipple snapped at the head). I had no idea, luckily my rim was strong enough to keep true enough to be unnoticed. I just have to wonder if I hit 80kph down Mt Alford with a broken wheel, I shudder to think of the possible consequences. I suffered badly at the ~35k to go mark and was on the ground in agony with cramps in both legs, a wonderful comment from an Ipswich Cycling Club rider, to take a bullet to the head, spurred me on. My fantastic riding buddy, Dave picked me up and nursed me back to the finish. A nice gentleman also stopped for help as I massaged one of my legs at the top of one the the many hills, he gave me a squirt of his Cramp Stop (http://www.doward.com.au/index.php?page=crampstop) which amazingly provided some immediate relief. So the other Dave and I managed to finish with a 6 hour ride time, which I thought was okay for a first attempt. Also Dave of the Crouching Tiger fame I think I chatted to you for a while, nice talking to you! I'm definitely encouraged to try more longer rides in the future, with the right preparation.

I would have been around the same section at the start as you, I saw the Mango as well...I found two other '100m widows' to chat to after seeing off hubby for the 100m and waiting for the 100k ride to start, I ended up riding the entire ride with one of them, which made it a little more pleasant (and she'd done the ride bef!ore and could give me a heads up to what was coming up around the corner, ie that climb.

I have reservations about ever doing the 100 mile ride, all that climbing out to and returning from Boonah...I looked at hubby's Garmin

Hi Mick, nope wasn't me. There was 16 of us doing the ride, 10 in the 160 and 6 in the 100. I think a couple of the guys were the last to come in around 3:15pm. did the 170km at an average of about 20kph. They achieved it which it is all about.

Yep those Crouching Tigers are conspicuous in their jerseys.
I chatted to one of your group beside the road at about 65 km, on a nice elevated ridge with sweeping view west.
He was on a bike with a prominent MTB style mudguards and he was battling cramps, I was unwell with other issues.

For those of you want to do Sunday's route from Rosewood to Boonah IN REVERSE DIRECTiON, this will be the day 8 route in this years BQ Cycle Queensland event, in September.
Well, almost the exact same route.

Did the 100km, my first century - loved every second of it. Talked to a heap of nice people and felt better than i anticipated at the end. Bike computer says 3hrs50mins riding time. Happy with that.
Very well organised ride, will be back next year for sure.


BTW - they have put some 2011 Photos up but im not in any of them (neither are the 4 other people i rode with). Might be more coming i guess...
