I might take a spin up there tomorrow but I'm a bit viral so I'm going to sleep in and see how I feel before heading off. Gotta fix my chain too.

Reasons not to:
- been messing with cleat wedges today which unmasked why I've had cleat and decleat issues for months...and only partially fixed.
- found a slow puncture at 5pm tonight (on my flat spotted rear), and had to get a newie Tom Wallace's = closed. 99 Bikes Chermside wanted $129 for a Conti GP4000s, so I bought a Schwalbe Ultremo R for $49. found a thorn in the punctured tire, which was a relief. rotated new to front to rear to bin.
- need a new rear light ($39 from 99 bikes) and a front light (still deciding what to get)
- my glasses keep fogging up
- slightly sore throat cough
- the dog is sick
- it is almost midnight and I am still awake.
- no sports gels..... though just made a batch of maltodextrin, honey, cordial, beta alanine, BCAAs, salt; and a jam sandwich.
- still a little flattish from doing 700 km last week.
- will get dropped by the most excellent power climbers, and have to make my way back along cr@ppy Samford Rd on my own.
- chance of rain = wet rims coming down Mt Glorious Rd.
- maybe lots of boy motor racers out tomorrow cutting blind corners. not likely to go to the coast when it is a mid week hol.

A 'good' time is whatever those Tuesday morning mates of yours would do.

Though probably more informative and interesting to use power meter data, or av power/kg estimates.
If you can do >3.5 watts/kg for an hour, that's very good.

Here's a rough estimate.
Mapmyride has it as 18.3km and 444 metre net gain.
Assumptions: bike and accessories wt 9.5kg, rider weight 78kg, time 52 minutes
av power = 186 watts
av power / kg = 2.4watts/kg.
av speed = 21.1kph

Hmmm. that doesn't look right. Knowing you are a strong rider, I'd presume your hill climb power weight ratio is more like 4-5watts/kg. I presume the error is large because an up and down ascent can require significantly more power then a consistent ascent.

Your Coot-tha result gives 4.2watts/kg.

I just got back from honeymoon yesterday so not quite up to it.
Did ride out to Eaton's Hill.
On the way back ended up having coffee on Racecourse road Hamilton.
Today it was quite a parallel universe with public displays of poor behavior, drunkenness, broken bottles and collapsed teenagers.
And that is before the horses started racing !

Thanks for the heads up re Eagle Farm. The 18yo step son went off to the 'races' today. I didn't realize it is the biggest attended day of the year, primarily by young people according to the blurb. I've seen the ruckus the young and inebriated make in Racecourse Rd on other youth oriented Eagle Farm Fests.....jumping on parked cars, peeing in people's letter boxes.....there goes the neighbourhood.
Hmmmm...might presume he won't be home for roast lamb.

edit: Comedian was the star attraction this morning. But admittedly the competition was NOT.
interesting factoid of this morning's ride. a late model white porsche carrera RSbeing driven hard, with a suspicious smell.....presumably clutch or brakes.

I went up there this morning too - all the way to Glorious and down to Highvale then to Mt OReilly Rd just to see how far I could get up it.
I got up to the bend before my physical resources became so depleted that my morale collapsed and that was that. When you just can't suck enough air and your brain goes catatonic because your legs have hogged all the blood it occurs to you that this suffering is unnecessary. Then you're stuffed. That's catatonic thinking for you, logical, soulless, desperate. A true hard man learns to deal with this mental recalcitrance and keeps pushing until he drops dead. Thats where the term "hard man" comes from - rigour mortice. So Mt O'reilly Rd remains a challenge to be conquered.
I was plotting and scheming all the way back to the Gap - lighter wheels, big rest beforehand, lower gear, gogo juice, subtract 25 years of age. That should be enough.

Have you tried going up the Goat track ?
It is now closed to motorized traffic, due to washouts and landslides.
Still seems to be quite tolerable going up on a road bike, only had to get off once to step around landslide boulders.
Beats struggling up the road from The Gap !

Then descend on the main road to The Gap - with care !
Avoid descending Goat Track or the Mt.Glorious to Samford road

Unfortunately though, next wet season might make Goat Track impassable to road bikes

Did the goat track once when the road surface was pretty good. Nice long climb (if you turn right at the top the total climb must be over 400m is it the longest unbroken climb in SEQ apart from the range?)

I like the struggle from the Gap - there are some significant descents when you are going up - its hard.

Having driven up both Nebo and Glorious, i'm dead keen to try them on the bike, pity i'm 140k away. Maybe i'll pop down there in a few weekends time.

And wasn't it a beautiful morning on the mountain today. Left Goodwill (AT) 5am and only saw 3 motorcycles on the way out.

Cool thread. I've ridden nebo countless times on a motorbike, now that I'm "properly" cycling I want to tackle it on the roadie! I've been inspired by my progress training on cootha... I wondered though, how do you guys stay safe up there with all the blind corners and dumbass motorcyclists (lets not kid ourselves, that's what a decent proportion are!)?? I figured it would be better on a Saturday morning than on a Sunday, but do you guys go VERY early morning? Eg, on the hill at 5-6am? Is it a lot worse at ~7am?? Have you had many close calls with the street racers?? Seems like an awesome climb so close to home. It's a very nice place too, love being up in the hills!

Motorbikes aren't the ones you need to look out for. It's the car clubs and locals. Alot of locals seem to come past really close like they're pissed off. Car clubs just scream past tailing each other. On blind bends if you can hear a car coming go out wide on entry so they can see you then cut in or just get out of the seat and sprint round. There's not much of a difference between 5 and 7, but once it hits about 8 or 9 it starts getting busy.

Last Saturday though I went up at 9 and only saw like 10 cars and 1 motorbike between gap and nebo.

Haven't had any close calls with street racers but have witnessed alot of brakes locking up and losing control.

Rightio then, you have me convinced! Assuming I get the all clear to continue from the physio this week I'll probably try to head up there at the crack'o'dawn on Saturday. Hopefully I can drag myself to the top!
