i'm pretty novice still, i did nebo for the first time a couple of weeks ago but i detoured up to the camp mountain lookout on the way.

i didn't think it was any harder than cootha, infact i reckon it was easier just a much longer climb

Yeah its a nice paced climb. For me I find it an easy climb but the first 5km my legs really don't want to fully engage climbing mode. In saying that once they have I'm pretty much sweet all the way to the double hairpin on the ascent back up Glorious :P After you get to the lookout on the left before Camp Mountain there isn't really any other sharp pinches until the climb to the Samford exit/Mt Glorious Tourist drive.

Compared to coot-that though, nebo feels like its never going to end... it might be just me though as i have only ridden it a couple of times and dont have much perspective as to where i am or how far i have to go... and doing laps of coot-that you can always bail out after a few, whereas if you bail out on nebo, well you basically stop in the middle.

Yeah I had a similar feeling/experience the first couple times. Once I got a few runs under my belt and learned the layout of the road to the point where I can now visualize the whole run in my mind it seems a lot faster and easier. You should try the back of Glorious sometime. You'll think finally a flat to recover only to look down and see youre still climbing up a 13% gradient hahaha.

I don't really think they are comparable climbs - Coot-tha is a continuous ascent and gets a little steep at the 2/3 point roughly. But most people are going to be up it in under 15 mins, under 10 for the good climbers. Nebo/Glorious is more up and down (2m up, 1m down) with many short climbs interspersed with a descent/rest point. It's about 90 mins roughly to the café at Glorious, so you need more endurance to get there. Coming from Nebo as most do even the steepest sections at the top are not as steep as Coot-tha - but you've got more metres elevation in your legs before you do it.
Both great climbs, but very different IMO. And Glorious from Samford is a different ball game again......

The only issue I have with Nebo is there's too many declines on the way up meaning you have inclines on the way down. So turning around at the Cafe and thinking you've done all the hard work is all a lie!

For those who've been doing it recently, has there actually been a noticeable different in motor-traffic after Newmans "bikie laws"?

Nope. But then again I ride it during the week where there's hardly any vehicle traffic heading up that way.

IMHO, Mt Mee and Nebo Glorious are highly overrated for intensity.

climbs with a bit of intensity:
- repeats of Coot-tha backside, esp upper 2/3
- Clear Mtn (northside)
- Lochinvar Rd heading west
- Mt Glorious frontside
- Mt Glorious backside
- Mayfield Rd (end part of OReilly's Rd)

basically, a climb isn't intense unless you feel relieved when the grade drops to or below 12%.
if you suffer on lower graded climbs, then your bike is over-geared for your fitness level.

You know what would help Maiala Teahouse? HAVING EFTPOS! (yea I was more than a little disappointed to find that out the hard way).

And Bellthorpe is a good addition to that "intense" list, along with (further north) the Obi Obi and any of the Mt Tambourine climbs except the one the Tour de Tambourine goes up, that one's easy.

If Mt. Mee rd is to casual for you just turn right and head up Oceanview Rd. Don't let the 4.9% average fool you. The first 1km is an average of 11% and after every short down is another 10% plus pitch. A mongrel of a climb especially after you have a couple 1000m of ascent in your legs.

Will be doing Nebo in the morning for the first time. Considering which wheels to use, the carbon clinchers have a 12-29 and are lighter. The alloys have a 12-27 and are heavier. Unfortunately I'd have to swap the freehub body over to swap the cassette.

No mountain goat (AT) 95kg but if I stay at a nice steady cadence I can usually go all day.

Only concern is the braking with the carbons on the long descents. Never had problems on many Coot-thas or Gravatts, but maybe Nebo is a bit hairier?

Its nebo. I hardly ever use the things. Glorious is the only time where I use them.

Meanwhile, for normal people, there ARE a couple of points where you need to brake pretty heavily, but you should be fine on carbons I reckon.

Where? Where the road splits into two with the divider down the middle as you get closer back to The Gap? Heading to the goat track?............. :P

Doing 60kph into a 40kph right hander with no hands giving the thumbs up at the speeding sign might not have been the smartest idea

I saw you using the brakes Luke. You should do it in the dark. Great fun.

My favorite no brakes descent is coming down Mt Mee towards Dag. It's fun buzzing and passing moto's going downhill. :)

Sorry, I don't have any  Yeah I've done Nebo a couple times in the dark. Always good fun. Especially on the run back down towards The Gap.

thanks Scott. yep know it well....used to ride up there on my tourer from Petrie in the 80s.
One of my old high school teachers subdivided part of her farm into Ocean View Estate.
I always 'didn't' look forward to that steep bit.

I was changing down a couple gears at the time. Getting ready to pedal once I coasted to the top of the hill ;)

Managed to get my Christmas free this year, decided to finally do the the Nebo/Glorious climb, is something like this the typical ride out that way? Anyone else planning some Christmas day rides, roads are usually so quiet its a sin not to go for a ride.

Yeah. That's a typical Mt Glorious route. There are a few variants to it heading back to Brisbane. The most popular ones are back via Mt Nebo, Camp Mountain and Samford. The BNA group ride we did was similar to yours but we came back through Camp Mountain avoiding traffic heading to Samford and along Samford Road.

If you are heading back along the Kedron Brook bikeway I suggest turning off onto Patricks Road and then joining the very start of the bikeway.

Your route is a loop of course which is fine in theory, but the Mt. Glorious Rd from Samford is incredibly steep and is usually avoided by most people i know.
I don't think the road from Samford would be a popular way to ascend and it is not even a popular way to descend because it is so heavy on brakes.
In other words Nebo/Glorious is easier to do as a return trip, up and down on the same road. (not the one to Samford !)

On the return be very careful on the corners where the road is split.
There are a few of these and one of them - (i think it might be the last one on the way back down towards the city) - is sharper than the others and easy to overcook it.
