Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Thought I'd start a thread about the Conquer Cancer ride. Personally I am volunteering over the weekend, riding in a mobile support role and looking forward to it. I'll be on yellow bike of the motorised variety. If you're riding either individually or in a team, I thought it would be a good idea for people to shout out here so we can all keep an eye out for each other. There's about 2,500 riders so far, so a lot of people out there. I hope as mobile support I have nothing to do except see smiling faces.

Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Good on you mate, good effort for being in support!
Ill be riding in the event and am looking forward to it. Got a call from the guides yesterday and got told all up over the two the days, the route will total 237km and we are going via Ferndale on day 1. I suspect we may head back via Woodford on the second day, but that is just my guess, the guides wouldnt say any more about the route. Bring it on!
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Hey guys,
I'm riding with a group of 6 of us. My wife, her sister, husband and daughter and another friend. Looking forward to it. A couple of us are riding from Fernvale out to the campsite and back tomorrow for a look and training ride. Cheers Case
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011SCA has a Toowoomba based team headed up by Rob Neilsen that will be riding in modified SCA jerseys. Give the 15 of them a shout out as you see them!

Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Me too, keen as.
Anyone done a recon on the route to Somerset? I am guessing Saturday will be 'harder' than Sunday, in that there will be more climbing to the campsite. But the downhills on the way back will be nice
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Rumor has it this will be the biggest bicycle fund raising event in Australia??
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011
Well if Oxford's number of riders in the OP is correct at 2,500, thats $6,250,000 straight up if everyone raised just the minimum, but as you can see by the leaderboard on the conquercancer website, some champion has raised over $50k herself with another three individuals over $25k. Supreme efforts by these people.
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011
Apparently numbers are down, I was just at a friends place (who is the chief sweep) and numbers are down to around 1500 it would seem due to a 'few' people withdrawing. Still puts it at $3.75M though. Route is a bit of a Cook's tour to get away from Brisbane. Life is not about waiting for the rain to pass.....it's about learning to dance (or ride) in the rain.

Conquer Cancer Ride 2011
That's a great effort. The ms ride raised half a mill. What did surprise me was that the Bris gc ride only raised a tiny amount (less than 20k?) for their charity from the largest mass participation ride in QLD. WT?!?? Once you can climb hills on a bike it's all downhill.
Hopefully I'll know what that's like..... one day. ![]()
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011
What do you know of the route? I have just seen the cheer points flyer and can see it basically goes via ipswich and pine mountain into Fernvale and up on the Saturday and back the same way on the sunday... Is there any more info you can share oxford?
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011Good luck to all those excitedly packing their bags this weekend. I hope you have a blast!

Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011yep thanks Comedian, got back from the crew meeting, loaded up the moto, put the ID signs on, laid out my gear for tomorrow, all set to go. just need to fuel up in the morning and I'll be right to go.
good luck to all the riders riding. mcarrigg, the route winds out of Brisbane in a meandering back road manner avoiding from what I can tell most of the majors. the last 30 to 40 kms is hilly undulating roads, peaking at about 220m, then 180m a couple of times before dropping back to about 90m. Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011i nearly ran over a short, scruffy, kinda worried looking chap this morning, as he ran along the hard edge of the road near the new traffic lights on sumners rd, at the top of the mt ommaney offramp.

Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011We raised 4.7 million WOW, 1375 (approx) riders, covering 236 km.
Apart from the fact that the ride was for cancer research I felt proud to be a part of it, organisation was fantastic, only one off that I know of, Sunday weather was a bit testing in stages. If you were thinking of it this year, but did'nt, do it next year. Cancer must be defeated. Hats off to the organisers
Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011I'm in for 2012!
Maybe a BNA tem? The only good Cyclist is a Bicyclist

Re: Conquer Cancer Ride 2011
I posted the idea this year , but it was on the back of cyclones & floods , understandably why more did'nt participate, each individual has to raise $2500.00 to be able to ride. Teams can fundraise together but funds cannot be transferred between members. May be different next year when they get their responses returned. If BNA had a team I would be in,riding on your own for this distance is tough.
