I think I'd have passed him had I not braked for the exit :) By the time I'd caught him, there was no time to slip past. Monoplanars can do only so much....

Am I the only one that thought that the turn off at the bottom of the bridge was incredibly dangerous? The stopping distance you need on a bike going 60kph is quite long. I overshot and was worried for a bit there that I was going to plow into Dan.

Transport Minister Rachel Nolan commented in a statement that the speed limit is 'advisory', and that, given the height and slope of the bridge, cyclists should take extra care.
"Cyclists will need to manage their speed as they head down the crest of the bridge and we've put an advisory speed limit of 10km/h in place," she commented.

66.4 kph for me, I didn't pedal or get aero had absolutely no problems stopping for the turn.

There is more than enough area to go straight ahead (it comes out on Lytton Road), so no it isn't dangerous.

The only danger would be if you didn't use a level of common sense, you really have to responsible for your own actions, if they stuck a chicane halfway down, would that make it any more or less dangerous, there is warning signs at the top advising you of the steep decent, it's supposedly a 10kph zone, short of making it a pedestrian only walkway, I can't see how they can make it safer.

P.S. I'll bring some coco pops for munga's breakfast next Raturday.

let me qualify that by saying that we made it more dangerous by being all balls-out. regular commuters, or strangers, would not be riding as aggressively as we were today.
if you felt you were getting too close to dan, you probably were, however, if you rode that path again, you would know the corner was coming up and be more prepared for it.
was bloody awesome fun tho!

Plus, dan did warn everybody at the top that there was a sharp turn down the bottom, he repeated that warning as we were descending, wazza & I were coasting down & heard him quite clearly, neither waz or myself had any difficulties making the turn.

Not sure with verbal warnings from the guy leading, the signs on the bridge, etc.

Everybody chose their own speed, I agree with munga, we all chose to hit it fairly hard, we are all responsible for our own actions, we chose fun over extra safety, nobody else can be responsible for our actions. Most people made the turn, I think out of our whole pack, 3 maybe 4 guys didn't, nobody crashed, no harm, no foul.

Maybe those who didn't make the turn misjudged how quickly their bikes stop from that sort of speed.

Awesome Dan! My mates bike was freshly serviced and sporting a new chain and a new six speed cassette. We ended up doing 65km odd, including a run back into the city for beans...

At one point we pulled up to a light and about a small house worth of Italian bikes rolled in beside us... They seemed happy... :-)
Loving my Merida's and working towards adding a Pinarello to the stable... Go go go...

overall, i think we did ok considering none of us ride the 'riverloop east' very often.
keen to do it again, but argh! all those red lights!
the best part was from kingsford smith dr to kangaroo point cliffs. the wort part was southbank..
spent a few minutes waiting for the late/lost/explorers.
saw some jellyfish from the gateway
saw a ferrari california in a garage
vomited on kingsford smith drive - wal owes me one breakfast.
stopped at about 1400 traffic lights
rode on the footpath for a bit
browning st swapmeet was a success as usual.
gtralex7dude, call me maybe re: your 105.

see ya next week!
Thanks Team that was a bonzer bike ride.
Sorry i had to take a shortcut home from Bulimba - had some domestic driving duties to attend to.
Then i had to pack up for the Tour de Tamborine destination.
This is how i felt AFTER the TdT

Sounds like it was pretty warm Steve! I got my sweat on by mowing the lawn and resurfacing the bathroom floor.

A sensible plan.
I would say that Tour de Tamborine was taxing.
Fortunately i got in at about 9.15, just before it got really hot.
After the event i found it a physical strain just looking at some Antique shops at North Tamborine.
A business proprietor took pity on me and told me to go and have a lie down.
Felt better after a sleep.
There was a stunt team show at the Sportsground after the event.
