Take the lane on Mt Coot-tha Rd

Although there is a marked bike 'lane' at the bottom of Mt Coot-tha Rd, don't use it. I was nearly cleaned up by a van turning across my path into Richer St while using it. I should have taken the lane behind the cars travelling at about the same speed (as you do coming down Coot-tha). I fully believe the van driver's view was obscured by the cars in front and my naive timid use of the bike 'lane'.

At over 70kph coming down Mt Coot-Tha I'm in the middle of the lane....

I bet some-one's now going to tell me it's a 50 kph limit and I shouldn't be riding that fast

If you see a situation such as that, get the speed off immediately. If you knew the general level of health in the community, and the associated visual acuity, you'd not expect drivers to see a cyclist, let alone accurately estimate their speed.

When I know I am going to ride at speed on roads, I'll turn on my headlight, flashing mode. It makes a big diff to being noticed.
