Also had a look at the other path currently being built between Greenslopes Bus Station and Greenslopes Hospital. It runs parallel with the new bike track and at one section only has a wire gate separating the two. Seems like a duplication in parts.
Does seem strange. My guess is as the V1 is meant to be "bikes" only. I believe the Brisbane council decided to put in a link for pedestrians as well which can also be used by cyclists. Primarily looks to provide access to Greenslopes hospital from Busway and for residents to get to Greenslopes busway from Holland Park area.

And now it's raining yet again! The construction workers will disappear for another week or more....worse than cyclists, must think that they'll dissolve like spun sugar

It isn't just the path to finish, they are also doing some reinforcing/retaining walls either side of where the path goes underneath the bus exit to Birdwood Rd.

If you all promise to ride single file from now on then maybe - maybe - BQ can be persuaded to wield their considerable power and influence to get some if these projects finished for you. It may mean paying bicycle rego to help cover the cost.

Noticed this was updated today http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name ... orway.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It now says the birdwood rd bit is "due for completion late June 2013". Well at least the weather forecast for the next week is good.

On the bus this morning. Just went past the Birdwood Road exit/entry to the bike path. Saw a small truck pull into the path, so at least the concrete is set. Looks as though the works needing finishing are just some minor landscaping, a fence/barrier or two and perhaps some line marking. At a guess the only risk of delay is inclement weather and any infrastructure works required to the intersection if not done already. All going smoothly should be about 10 days away.

Now the track is almost open, the challenge will be to negotiate the two lanes where the traffic is going up the ramp on the freeway. May have to cross over the last set of lights (as if about to head up the skinny track) and pull over until there is a break. The time we go through there which is about 6:45am, the traffic is too much to barge across like we can on at other times.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I suspect the authorities are expecting us to cross over the road at the lights on the corner of Weller Rd and Birdwood Rd when the bridge is complete so we remain on the widened path the other side.

Coming home will be okay as we will just cross Birdwood Rd at the track exit and mosey up and cross over near the Shell garage heading south.

Safest/slowest way is going to be to cross to the other side at the Weller Rd lights, then up the footpath there and back across at the lights for the bikepath.
Getting back is a bit easier.

I can see some motorists getting cranky if bikes try to hold the 2nd or 3rd lane there heading away from the Marshall Rd lights.

Inbound the safest way in my experience is just to claim the lane at the lights on the south side of Marshall Road adjacent the servo.

If the traffic is free flowing you'll be fine. If it's jammed up due to the motorway entrance change lanes into the right lane or bus lane and carry on straight through to Birdwood.

Trying to cross traffic multiple times is way more dangerous and much slower, especially considering it's the law to dismount to cross unless there is a bike signal.

The other leg of that must be ranked as one of the most poorly thought out pieces of infrastructure of any sort, anywhere.

While not a BCC matter, any form of north-south infrastructure servicing the northern suburbs of Brisbane remains unfinished (unstarted even).
And ANY form of cycle infrastructure useful for a commute outside of the Kedron Brook bike path. North of that there is NOTHING.

Mid June been and gone and they're still working on it....

Shouldnt be surprised as the completion dates always get pushed out on any bike path extension, same thing happened for the Logan Rd to Miles Platting Rd and the 2nd stage down to the Gateway overpass a couple of years back.

Was hoping they'd have it done by this weekend ready for the Brissie to Bay. Would have been nice to roll to and from the start line on a new path.

FYI

Just nearby, BCC are altering the Ridge St underpass bikeway. They started work on it in the last couple days.
Location - http://goo.gl/maps/J6pMV

The alteration is a result of an accident report BCC recieved. The existing underpass uses the eastern box culvert as a 2way shared path. The accident occured earlier this year when 3 riders heading south collided with 2 riders heading north inside or just exiting the culvert on the southern end. This was due to some of the 3 riders riding 2 abreast in the culvert and around the corner. Excessive speed and lack of safety lighting was also an issue.

The new alignment will use a second box culvert to separate the shared traffic streams. One culvert with be for northbound traffic, the other for southbound traffic. I believe additional lighting, line markings and signage will be implemented.

In my opinion, the existing alignment wasnt too bad AS LONG as you reduced your speed, dinged your bell in the culvert (to warn people you were exiting) and took it easy around the corner. But the new alignment will be safer all round.

So moral of the story is - BCC will actively try to correct saftey problems on the bikeways but they need to be notified. And no, complaining on the forum doesnt count. Call or write a email/letter and send it in. The more detail you add, the better.

Safe riding.

That's a good change.
The southern exit is definite dangerous if people (idiots) try to pass there. It's made worse by pedestrians sharing the tunnel - if you try to sneak past a pedestrian there without consideration for a rider coming too fast the other way then there's going to be trouble.

Great news if open.

Had a look Sunday and Monday, wasn't open. Great if it's open now. Will have a roll down there on this evening's commute then.

Went for a spin on this evenings commute back home, soooo much better than the Esher St way and much much safer in the dark. Excellent track.

Be nice for them now start on the track over Lewisham, along the busway/freeway and come out at O'Keefe St. But that's another stage that won't kick off for a while.

YEP, ITS OPEN!

Rode past, saw the gate open, turned around and rode it.

Very nice to ride - like red carpet compared to the old goat track!

I shall enjoy the few minutes that I have the 2nd Place KOM on the segment

I'll be dragging the aerobike out on Friday and making a Strava segment

The works on the nudgee bridge at nundha is going good. The flooring of the bridge has been completed bar the bit over the existing bikeway :)

Took the bikeway home tonight, not another bike to be seen. Much better than the old way, especially at night.

Tried making a segment and giving it a little gas on the way home. Unfortunately it got swamped by the Brisbane to Gold Coast Ride that takes the busway adjacent.

http://app.strava.com/segments/4521385

I don't like my chances of claiming a KOM considering the bunches that were flying past there last year
