Rockhampton or Yepoon Rides

I am heading over to Rocky for about an 8 week stint for work in a couple of weeks time. I'm taking my bike so would appreciate any advice on rides/group rides/racing in either place.

I'm not sure which location the accommodation will be so all opinions welcome.

Anybody know what it would be like to commute between each location?

Cheers

RB

Sorry mate but obviously there are no cyclists in Rocky who currently use this forum.

But i am sure you will find there is an active road cycling fraternity, and i am sure it will be easy to find via bike shop perhaps.

In fact Rocky is renowned for its cycling legacy, as evidenced by names such as Kenrick Tucker and Anna Meares.

But i doubt that it is a good idea to "commute" from Yeppoon to Rockhampton. Thats basically a country road with coarse chip surface and all the usual challenges such as roos and indifferent motorists.

These days Rocky is not the quaint town that it used to be. :(

As Elantra said Rocky has a very vibrant cycling community. A lot of it is based around track riding however I understand that there are a good number of rides organised throughout the week and weekend. Tuckers Cycle Inn 83 High Street and the Giant dealer 80 Musgrave Street are in North Rocky while City Centre Cycles Archer & Alma Streets in central Rocky all have organised bunch rides. I havent been to Different Cycles at 22 Upper Dawson Street I have talked with the proprieters of the first 3 shops and they all seem to be good people. Hope this helps!

Its amazing what you find out when hunting for retro bike bits!!!!!

.....BTW . Stay on the coast at any of the towns between Yeppoon and Emu Park. Yeppoon has the most accommodation and shops.

Thanks all for the advice.

I have seen on a web search that there seems to be a strong presence in Rocky which should be fun.

I'll have a look at the "commute" as its probably no worse than what I do currently :D

Thanks again

The commute between Rocky and Yeppoon is fine. It's a commonly used training road. Depending on where you start it's only about 35 - 40km.
