Hi all, just signed up for the Moreton bay 160km event. http://moretonbay100.org.au/Home.htm

Just wondering if anyone rides this area often, what is the terrain like? I don’t get over this side of town at all and it would be good to gauge what gearing I will need for the day.

Ride map is here, http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/co ... 165km-2013

Cheers.

The most 'climbing' you should do would be the Samford-Whiteside and the Narangba-Caboolture route out near Rocksberg. The rest is pretty much flat with a few hills here and there. Samford-Dayboro has its ups and downs but nothing too bad. It shadows the old railway line that used to link the two so most of the steep terrain is avoided. While your out there enjoy the scenery. Its mostly rolling hills with a slight 'climb' up a bigger hill at Kobble Creek.. Dayboro-Petrie is long, hot and you will get sunburnt even at night time for some reason. There are some gradual hills like the previous leg but these will be a bit longer (basically out of Dayboro, about half way between and then where the overtaking area is towards Petrie) with a gradual decent heading towards Petrie. Road quality is decent - basically the typical regional surface quality. Dayboro town centre recently had their road resurfaced to better condition than brisbane but its only about 100m long haha). Haven't done the Whiteside-Narangba backstreet route but heading through Narangba is another gradual hill that you should power through. Haven't done the Rocksberg leg but there should be a couple climbs/hills out that way. Morayfield-Deception Bay is pretty much flat with the biggest climb being the road over the Bruce Highway. A few hills around Redcliffe but still you should be able to power through even after having done 130km so far. Depending on the time when going through Scarborough there will be 2 rest stops. The first one will be to get some fantastic seafood from Morgans Seafood and just down the road will be the ride rest stop for drinks and to eat your seafood :P Sandgate-Bracken Ridge is flat but the only 'climbs' being hills or the road over the Gympie Arterial Road/Bruce Highway.

G'day WMC1

[edit:] lukeyboy posted while I was drafting mine!! [:edit]

I am going to sign on for this ride too. It should be a really nice ride through some nice rural and coast areas. Plenty of hills in the first half of the ride.

Regarding hills etc, obviously what I think is a hill you might think is a flat....or a mountain, it is all a bit subjective, but this is how I would describe it in summary (NOTE: I haven't ridden the Jinker track part for a VERY long time  but most of the rest I am reasonably familiar with on the bike):

Overall, this is not a ride for people who don't like hills but there are no mountains to climb. They have concentrated the climbing mainly in the first half of the ride (up to the 90k mark) and then the rest is relatively flat with a few nice hills thrown in. However, the run along the coast line in the 120 - 150 stage, though reasonably flat can be a complete bugga if there is a strong headwind (not uncommon IMO).

In a bit more detail, the first 10 k is flattish with a few hills to warm the legs up. Then the hills increase from there. Nothing spectacular at first but descent hills. I remember a couple of good hard hills in the Bunya Rd area, they'd be the ones on the profile graph at about the 20 k mark.

Then it is OK with some good long hills out to Dayboro (about the 47k mark) and some more long and high-ish hills to grind up after Dayboro out to the 60 k mark approximately, and some nice down hills to go with them (though not as spectacular as the profile graph makes them look). After that there are still some good hills but nothing as big as has been done to this point and as I said the second half of the ride is pretty flat.

Sorry if that is all a bit vague, no doubt someone will be able to give more detail with road gradients etc...

Hope to meet you out there  .

Who else is thinking of doing this ride????

Thanks for the replies guys. Lots of good info and very descriptive.

Hills don't bother me and i climb Mt Cootha reguarly, so this one should be ok. I guess i wil lleave the standard gearing on the rear.

I may see some of you on the day, looking forward to this event as i missed the Ipswich 160 (170) this year :( .

Cheers.

I missed it too, but that was because I am only just returning to riding after two and a half years off the bike, so it wasn't really an option to do a century ride (metric or imperial) in April  . Should be no problems by August, and I am really looking forward to it.

If you are a regular Cootha rider you definitely won't need to change the gearing. I drove the Jinker / Bunya Rd stretch yesterday to refresh my memory of it. It looks fantastic! Some long gradual hills and a couple of sharp ones, BUT some fantastic downhills too, a bit curvy :D , will need to watch for traffic and other riders though.

It's great now they fixed that bridge !
The Sandgate to daybro rd had some nasty pot holes and fast traffic last time I went that way.

No hills on there to worry about. All double on a 12-23.
