visiting Brisbane

Postby turbus » Tue May 07, 2013 7:14 am

I'm heading up to Brisbane this weekend coming 10th to 14th and would love to do some riding whilst there. :D
So any ideas for bunch rides or just some good rides to do would be greatly appreciated
I'm staying in Birkdale

Cheers Paul

Refer to the map for the regular route along the bay + Mt Cotton

Hi Paul, where you go in this part of the world is determined by by whether you like hills or not.
The most "iconic" Brisbane rides would be the "Riverloop" which is a fairly flat 28km loop, or Mt. Coot-tha, which is a hilly 8km loop.
Those distances do not include the distance to ride or catch train to the commencement of those circuits.
Other reasonably popular weekend destinations include Manly boat harbour to the east of Birkdale, Nudgee Beach to the north (via gateway bridge bike path), or Mt Cotton to the south, as indicated by Crawf in the post above.

If you are not very familiar with Brisbane i would stick to the Riverloop, MtCoot-tha, or Mt Cotton.
The first 2 are very popular circuits so you can just go there and follow someone !
Join a bunch ?- most but not all will be happy about this.
6.30am to 9am is the best time for (weekend) riding at this time of year.

Since you're in Birkdale the most logical loop for you would be the Wynnum Loop. Each Saturday morning there is a shop Ride with Planet Cycles 1 Logan rd, Woolloongabba, leaving at 6am doing this route. This week there will most likely be 2 groups, 1 fast at about 32+km/h and 1 social at about 30km/h.

I've done this one a few times new riders are welcome and it's a good group of people that will show you the way. Either ride there then ride home or you could peel off when you're close to home (loop goes through Birkdale)

Or if you want to ride on Sunday morning. Get up to Lifecycle 276 Petrie Tce, and ride with one of the 2 groups leaving from at 6.15am doing the River Loop. They also do a fast river loop on Tuesday's 5.30am leaving the Regatta City Cat stop
