A woman in her 50s has died after after a truck crashed into four cyclists in north Queensland this morning.

The rider went into cardiac arrest after she was knocked from her bike by the truck in Townsville.

Three other cyclists in their 50s and 60s were taken to hospital with facial, neck and other injuries.

It is understood the truck was overtaking the group.

Police are investigating.

I've read in other media that the truck was 'attempting' to overtake. How the fossie do you 'attempt', either it is safe to overtake or not. This is what gives me the irrits. Sad and condolences to all involved. How many more deaths does it take for decisive action to be implemented?

And that is just the one that made the news (because someone actually died).
Over the past 5 weeks I have had at least the same number of mates involved with altercations with motor vehicles.
I personally was involved in a collision with a truck on Friday 14/6, leading to a skin graft the size of my hand to the back of my left calf, a totally destroyed bike and a weeks stay in hospital.

From Google maps I can't see that it is a difficult section to drive or to ride - good line of sight, well marked road, etc. This will be one to watch for developments, especially in line of the outcry over the disgusting outcome of the death of Richard Pollett at the hands of a clearly at-fault Luke Stevens.

If you know the section perhaps you could enlighten us on whether the lack of vegetation at road side in google maps is still the case.

I do notice a gentle bend and an unbroken while line at the spot that I understand is where it occurred (at culvert/bridge).

I'm not too sure that I would want to be riding in Queensland. This article popped up as I was doing a search on this tregedy.

Cyclists one third of emergency room cases
May 24, 2013

Cyclists account for one third of all transport related injury cases presenting at Queensland hospital emergency departments.
That works out to about 6000 bicycle riders, including children, arriving at the state's emergency rooms each year.

etc
etc
etc
