Moggill Rd Commute

Moggill Rd Commute

Postby CRV » Tue Jan 21, 2014 7:43 pm

I've recently done a ride from Bellbowrie through the city to the Eagle Farm area as a work commute. Just putting it out there for those that do this route on a regular basis, what do you find the best/ easiest way to go? Early morning I have no probs using most of Moggill Rd, just find the arvo's daunting with the volume of traffic. I have found sticking on the Western freeway bikeway till Fig Tree Pocket then hopping onto Kenmore Rd works well. From Kenmore Rd I use Gem Rd and hit Moggill just before Rafting Ground Rd. From there unfortunately I need to stay on Moggill til Pinjarra Rd. Only downside to Pinjarra is the steep section that feels like riding up a brick wall :-)

Can't help you on a commuting basis but agree that Pinjarra Hills Rd looked a lot flatter on Google Earth than the reality, it feels like Everest to me. Nice quiet street though, saw a buck and two does standing under the trees a couple of Sundays back.

Sorry CRV, no other options I don't think, unless you want to drive to somewhere like the Kenmore Park and Ride, and ride in from there.

A guy I know lives at Anstead and drives to the start of the bikepath at Akuna Oval (Cubberla Creek Reserve) in Kenmore and rides in from there.

I don't blame you for not liking the traffic through that section of Moggill Rd. It fast, busy, windy and no shoulder through most of that.

That's what I do. Problem for me is going inbound where the shoulder disappears at the top of Pinjarra hills, just as you are blind to traffic at the crest.

If only they'd get that bridge from Birkin to Sumner Roads going. We'd be able to go straight arcoss and onto the Centenary bikepath.
I don't hold high hopes.

We've had bridges and bypasses planning out here for 40 years. Last time I looked, there was no more infrastructure planned on the 25 year plan, despite more and more subdivisions opening up. No wonder Moggill road and Kenmore traffic is a mess.

Mind you, given that it took 3+ years of 2+ hours one way commutes for them to complete the 1.2km upgrade on Moggill Rd at Misty Morn, I'd probably be dead before any meaningful upgrades were completed even if they started now.

There's a longer more scenic route that is very low traffic if you want to go from Gem Rd. It's a fairly easy route. Pullenvale Rd is probably the toughest as it's an energy sapper towards the start/end of any ride.

If you turn right onto Pullenvale Rd from the Moggill Rd bikepath shoulder past the nursery, you can connect to Grandview Rd and follow it towards Lancing St. If you follow that, it will take you directly to Bellbowrie through Mt. Crosby Rd, until Sugars/Kangaroo Gully Rd. Not sure where you need to go in Bellbowrie but that should really help.

I really really really don't reccomend taking Moggill Rd towards the retirement climb on any afternoon. It's far too dangerous.

You're correct in that the city plan does not/will not cater for these areas except for a centre at Moggill. I'm not going to get into how ridiculous the planning infrastructure is in this area because I've had that discussion far too many times and it bothers me far too much.

Thanks for the feedback guys :-) Shpox, thanks for sharing the scenic route, I might just give it a try even though it will add about 5k, probably worth it to get off Moggill. As for hills, ah well, not getting away from them this side of town :-) I normally do my commuting from the Northside to the city/airport area which is fairly flat :-).

Ah well the hills arguably make for one of Brisbane's best training rides. 1x Pullen commute is worth like 3 riverloops and then some.

Give it a go and let me know how you get one. When you crest towards the Pullenvale hall, it's pretty stunning and pretty much an easy and fast ride down from there. It'll take a few months of commutes to get sick of it.

I did the ride through Pullenvale today, :-) thank you heaps Shpox, a few cars but nowhere near as chaotic as Moggill Rd. And the scenary is awesome, the hills not too bad. I used Mt Crosby Rd to get up to Kangaroo Gully Rd then up to Bellbowrie. Will be a good route for longer weekend rides as well :-)

i know a few people who start at moggil/bellbowrie and go over the moggil ferry. makes for a long commute, but there's bike lanes and it's not as hilly

Rather than ride Kenmore Road, save yourself some time, effort and some hassle from traffic, and follow the bike path onto Akuna Oval then get off onto Garaboo St and find your way onto Kersley Road. It ends up at Kenmore Road not far from Gem.
