Storm damage

Yesterdays storm was a shocker.
I dont know the full extent of damage to SE Qld yet, but there is a lot of damage to popular cycling routes.

In particular, trees down blocking streets at St Lucia, and smashed windows on the road at Toowong .
There were lots of commuter cyclists going home from work last night who got punctures on Glen St. Toowong.
I am sure there are plenty of other issues from yesterday.
It was a bad storm, and not much warning.

One of my CBD apartment windows blew out. Spare bedroom is saturated. Home from work cleaning up. It was the most violent storm I can recall. Most of the south facing windows on the building are broken.

Hail has pierced the sliding screen door I have and gone right through the door mat that got brushed up against the door. No idea how the big glass part didn't get hit/break. Tired to ride down west end and on the v1 yesterday but so many tree's down, some too big to move under your own power.

I got caught in the hail riding home yesterday. I live on the Bayside, and fortunately we missed the massive winds that Inala/Toowong/CBD got.
Did a loop early this morning and got drenched again. Have spent a lot of time lately cleaning drivetrains, but we can use the rain. Just not the associated damage!

I've just managed to cover the broken window with a couple of garbage bags, but not before another shower blew more rain inside. I was a bit nervous standing on a wooden chest in front of the gaping 16th floor window frame to secure the bags at the top, but assistance from the SES is unlikely to be available any time soon.

The body corporate manager says a timely repair is unlikely also - since there are so many broken windows shortages of glass are expected and of course the glazing companies are going to be flat out. He's organising for a carpenter to board up the broken windows - around 14 of 'em.

Looks like the damage may not be too serious - lots of wet clothing and bedding but that can be washed and dried. The carpet will probably dry out otherwise it will have to be replaced and an insurance claim will be required.

The glass is actually covered by the body corporate's building insurance.

That sounds really scary, especially since there has been quite a bit of wind today.
I guess it will be a nightmare to get broken windows in buildings and cars fixed up.
After the 1984 hailstorm that affected SE Qld., the wait to get cars fixed was several weeks

Window boarded up and secure for now, so it's a matter of waiting for the glaziers to reach us, then then painful process of getting quotes for the damage to our contents - blinds, carpets and furniture damaged the worst.

Thanks Foo, but after watching tonight's news bulletins it's obvious that my troubles are small on the scale of the event.

A photo gives some idea of the forces that were unleashed.
Guyatt Park at St Lucia was particularly affected.


Yesterday the bikepath was "closed" at the start of Coro Drive.
Not sure why they put this barrier precisely here, there is no place to cross the road here.
The bikeway was completely clear beyond this barrier, to the logical crossing point at the next set of lights.


A short ride this morning through the inner west demonstrated the destructive path of this storm.
Road signs ripped out of the ground by the force of the wind, new fences snapped off at the base, 50 foot tree trunks snapped halfway up.
