Long climbs GC/SC ?

Postby Crawf » Wed Dec 13, 2017 1:25 pm

In search of some longer climbs on the GC or SC.
Preferably quiet out of the way climbs, sealed, with a steady gradient, without too much traffic that are 20mins+, good for repeats?
Excluding the normal nebo/glorious/mee.
Any suggestions? Post some routes/Strava links if you have them?
Thanks

I don't have maps, but it shouldn't be too hard to find these on Strava, RideWithGPS or MapMyRide.

GC
Nerang to Binna Burra
Canungra to O'Reillys
Currumbin Valley - Tomewin - Murwillumbah loop.

SC
Landsborough to Montville
Palmwoods to Montville
Nambour to Montville
Buderim 9 Challenge route.

Canungra to O’Reillys is a nice climb but the road is crap.
Binna Burra is good, but not the smoothest, but better than O’Reillys.
Have to look up the other loop from the GC recommended.

Sunny Coast: Palmwoods-Montville is the most used climb on the coast...but there are two ways to go...turn right just out of Palmwoods are you are on Hunchy Rd...definitely an out of seat experience.

Look up Postmans track as the hardest road on the coast followed by Obi Obi (so hard they named it twice) Rd. Obi Obi is hard to get to though as it is dirt on the way down as the road is split.

As mentioned Buderim Hills if you need to stay close to the beach and are up for repeats...Somerset Rd is the real challenge on Buderim - too hard for the Buderim9 event mentioned by RonK.

My fav climbs on the Sunshine Coast/Moreton Bay region are -

Campbells Pocket Rd - steep pinches but a flatter reprieves in between - https://www.strava.com/segments/897475

Bellthorpe Range Rd - steepish steady climb with some nice little switch backs - https://www.strava.com/segments/8567369

Oceanview Rd, via Mt Mee Rd - nice and steady start, steep section at the start of Oceanview and then some ups and downs towards the top - https://www.strava.com/segments/16649743

Still closed, but apparently there is a well worn path around the rockslides - ie rideable.

Planning to do a ride tomorrow that heads into the hills from Burleigh Heads through the Currumbin Valley, Tomewin ( via Tomewin Rd) and Bialmbil, (via Hogan’s Rd)and back to the coast at Tweed Heads, but curious about the steepness of the climbs ?

The hire bike is std crank with 11-28 cassette, so any sustained climb over 10% is a bit of an issue for a non mountain goat like me. Beechmont is ok, but the really steep pitches over 15% are an issue.

Any feedback on the three hills in this route ?

Well, done and dusted. Because of lack of local knowledge, took a bit of a kack handed route, but it was a great ride. Some nice scenery, tough climbs (Bain’s Rd !!!!) and the descent was good.

4hrs total ride time for me, so happy with that, given the humidity is a killer for me.

A reasonable number of people are riding it - check results by month:

Ride Springbrook this morning. Was a really pleasant and odd feeling - only cicadas (bugger me they can be loud !!!), crunching leaves and me sweating profusely.
So many leaves and bark covering the road, was a bit eerie, but would be a great descent.

Thanks for he tips

Canungra to Springbrook is also a great (if killer) climb especially if you return up Henri Roberts Drive to Mt Tambourine. Definitely one for the climbers

OK, it's time to start planning the rides next time I'm in Gold Coast in Dec. Will be there house sitting from 8th to 20th Dec, so have some good days to get out early in the morning and back before it gets too hot, and then some family time. Based in Benowa, so not far to get to the hills.

Here are some routes and comments from rides/routes I've done in the past, so if you can offer some others or alterations, that'd be great. Don't mind some decent climbs, but someone in the area seems to love making roads with some REALLY steep pitches, and that gets tiring at the end of a ride - so happy to avoid them if possible ....

Up Springbrook & down Beechmont
Great rides as Springbrook was still closed. Happy to do again, but open to different ways back.

Over the Border
Some of the routing I did took me over some interesting bits heading out of Currumbin, and the flat bit on the NSW side before climbing back was a bit boring. Starting to run out of water before I found a servo around Bilambil

Up to O'Reillys from Canungra
Nice climb, but the road is bloody rough. Need 32c tyres or suspension for this, so probably won't do that again.

Binna Burra & return
Great views at end and really challenging last km, but also some crappy roads. Will do again.

Up Beechmont & back via Canungra & Clagiraba
Beechmont climb is great, but lack of water available along the way made it hard (set out a bit late), and being on a hire bike with 39/28 low gear made it a bit hard. Probably underfuelled as well.

Snapper Rocks Recovery ride
Nice coastal ride with some great places to have brekky halfway.

Happy to try some other routes, even if it has a (short) drive to get there.

Let me know your favourite routes !!!

Springbrook road is planned to open again in October,
couldn't pay me enough money to ride the nerang/beaudesert road.
Springbrook / Numinbah Valley / Tomewin (aka Big loop) best day out on a bike on the GC IMO

edit, Urliup Rd , has a couple of K of gravel , but easily rideable.

Be interesting to ride it then and see what the traffic is like, and maybe do the loop in reverse.

A_P wrote:couldn't pay me enough money to ride the nerang/beaudesert road.
Is that the bit along Canungra/Caligiraba ? Wasn't brilliant, but didn't have any issues. Presume it's the traffic and speed that's the issue ?

A_P wrote:Springbrook / Numinbah Valley / Tomewin (aka Big loop) best day out on a bike on the GC IMO
Guess that means making a single route of the front half of Springbrook route & 2nd half Border Raid route. Cool, wioll see what that looks like :D

EDIT : OK, so looking at the map, You go from top of Springbrook, right onto Pine Creek Rd, then Left onto Nerang-Murwillumbah Rd to Numinbah, then down Tomewin (the bit where I went up on the Border Raid route), down into Currumbin and back to Benowa ?

Edit #2 : Seems like RWGPS won't let me follow Gold Coast Springbrook Rd from just after Polly's Country Kitchen as the road is still 'closed'. Will do it by just drawing lines, but will re-visit when the time is right.

OK, may try that. Planning on having 28c tyres on for the Qld trip, so that will hlp a bit

Is this what you mean ?

Talk about a solid day out - 137km and 2,000m of elevation :o

It would be a bit less climbing to go via Advancetown and to the west of Hinze Dam to Numinbah.

Different, but not by much.

I guess this is what you meant ? A bit shorter (124km vs 137km) and a tad less climbing (1,850m vs 2,050m).

To be honest, I'd rather climb Springbrook, as the route around the dam can have lots of traffic and high speed (OK to descend down there), and Springbrook is a nice climb. Either way, nice rides and big days out !!

Standing by for any other suggestions

A nice scenic and quiet recovery roll is Currumbin Valley out and back, dead end road so not much traffic at all;
