Ill guess - a reported 500 million, with Mike Rann (or 'Ranny' to his close friends) turning up at the start to give an impromptu speech in the best traditions of Al Gore. Lets just hope that Manbearpig doesnt turn up as well and ruin the day - as if dropbears weren't bad enough. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ManBearPig

Wigley Reserve is the one by the Buffalo. The Beachouse side is actually Colley Reserve.

The TV news said the route is Wigley Reserve to Semaphore and return.
A social ride. Robbie McEwen quoted by AAP saying: "We've [LA and RM] just said anyone who has a bike - it doesn't matter what it is, a racing bike, MTB, BMX, borrow it from the neighbour, just don't steal one."
Robbie declined an entry in the sweep: "Who knows? It could be one, could be 100, could be 1000, could be 10,000".
Turtur, McEwen, and anyone with half a brain is asking for sensible behaviour from cyclists and motorists. The Comments section of The Advertiser is displaying the usual lack of sense and proportion from some motorists.

What a brilliant spectacle - I'll put the number at 5,000 - pure guess of course. Rode from Glenelg to Semaphore, they turned around at the roundabout at Bower Road and went back to Glenelg, I went to Semaphore Road for coffee. We left at 6 am went up to Norton Summit and then had to quickly ride through town and Anzac Highway to get to the bay in time. The excitement is building there were scores of cyclists riding down Anzac Highway at 8:30 and the mass of cyclists at Wigley Reserve was amazing. Lance had turned around at Semaphore and was on his way back when he passed us near the rowing club at West Lakes. So many cyclists, can't wait for the rest of the week and the Community Challenge on Friday.

I rode to Glenelg with Robbie, two of his team and only about ten others from Mile End.
Awesome.

that was the coolest thing ever. so many riders and the roads were basically closed so we dodnt really have to worry about cars apart from one idiot who just threw him self into the pack and did skids into his driveway. grrrrrrr. other than that very good fun both mine and my dads bikes broke. dad broke his seat clamp and my pedal absolutely rooted its self about 20 min in. the pedal literally fell off the axel and sorta jammed but i kept riding and it was ridable so im up for some nice new pedals what a shame, lol. was a decent pace and a good ride. highlight though would have been fdj rocking up after the ride and spying out the chopper/ dragster bikes people were riding. they slng there race bikes and started riding around wigley reserve on choppers in full lycra with shoes and cleats. gold.

Damn it, I can't believe I missed that, I left not long after the chopper/lowrider guys got back and they were sitting on the grass right next to me.

Well well - wasn't that just insanely good fun ? Some cool choppers and cruisers - mums with toddlers on the back - guys towing advertising stands on their bikes - having both sides of the road available to ride on - taking roundabouts on either side - and being able to sit on 45km/h with ease. This was no ordinary group ride, just incredible. Sort of like cross between an organised group ride and a well behaved critical mass gathering. Huge fun. I love the crowds of people out on the sidewalk clapping and cheering too .. . Strange thing, and I heard more than one person comment on this ... that once you take cars off the road entirely, riding a bike becomes so much easier, safer, faster, and enjoyable for everyone. hmmmm.

I did the ride this morning and it was an honor to ride with Lance / Robbie , I was in awe with the sheer number of cyclists riding along both lanes most of the way with police escort, easily cruising at 35-45 kms with some effort along the flat route, loved seeing cyclists riding both ways when entering roundabouts - brilliant stuff

yeah the fdj boys on choppers was a spectacle every one missed the pros cause you all left too early probs bout half hour after lance finished i would guess and fdj showed up robbie a garmin fella a high road guy and some other dudes also rocked up, they hid behind the oakley van though talking to the oakley guys. they left pretty quick when people realised they were there lol. there were plenty of teams wizzing round glenelg though i went for a ride after and i reckon i saw 3 teams ag2r fdj and milram and the euskatel boys were probs around as there team van was there i didnt see them though. over all a good day it should happen again even without the pros. couple times a year i reckon. it would be very cool.

Lol - I called out (half in jest) 'Hey Mike - grab that nice looking pinny over there and give us a photo op'. Amazingly, the crowd cleared, and Mr Rann was more than happy to oblige. Nice bloke, I will have to take back what I said in a few posts back ^^ The crowd at about 0840hrs, still building up About 500m back from the start ... around 0900hrs.

I have a few picks of the radioshack boys, they pulled up right behind us with Big George, but havent worked out how to load pics of the blackberry yet. The radioshack kit looks really good in the flesh, and georges US champs kit and bike are cool. awesome fun ride and would love to do it again

+1 The RadioShack jerseys look really good - much better than those crappy preview shots that appeared on the net earlier.

I saw it on the ABC news, and was looking for BNA jerseys. Didn't see any. Not sure why this is in the SA section, I would have thought it was bigger than that. Best bit of coverage on cycling on TV I've seen in a while. Martin
