On this mornings ride along the beach I had a serious guy on his mega buck tri bike all decked out in super elliots gear give me a smile and nod whilst obviously working hard. Then on return leg a guy on an alloy roadie just cruising along look directly at me and ignore my nod and smile. And he had yellow lensed glasses so I made proper eye contact with him yet still failed to acknowledge me. w****r.

why are some people so full of themselves when we are all out there doing the same thing for reasons?

Dude its beach road.

If you have issues with people not acknowledging you on beach road get a new hobby

the road along the beach shiv is eluding to here in adelaide is far more friendly than beach road in melb missy...
its more uncommon to be snobbed by fellow cyclists along the esplanade etc, altho does happen a couple of times a ride i find... most here are quite generous with their acknowledgements... more prevalent than those who dont from adelaide in this thread...

Also the reason we all ride is because we enjoy it. Didnt feel like narrowing it down to training/fitness/weight loss etc as none of us would ride if we didnt get some sense of enjoyment out of it

i never waved to other people kicking the footy down at the local oval

Would you acknolwedge them if your footy went over near them? Or if you crossed paths? I just feel its a friendly polite thing to do, especially if your just cruising along. If someone is busting their gut on a hard training ride thats fine, but to look you in the eye from the other side of the road and ignore a fellow cyclist just seems a bit rude. Motorcyclists (well non Harley motorcyclists) nod or wave to each other, country motorists do as well, so why not cyclists?

Can I mount one of those nodding cats on my handlebars and let it do the nodding and waving for me. Sometimes I say gday to people but if you waved or said hello to every cyclist you went past then some days that would be all you did. Somedays I just feel like riding in my own world and choose not to acknowledge others, its not rude.

I find it more rude to look at them at not acknowledge, if you just keep your head down and pedal I have no issue. It just gives the feeling that you have been given the once over and deemed unworthy of a simple nod

what happens when you do the TDU ride? who gets a wave? 7,000 waves in 4 hours, that is around 1 wave every 2 seconds.

Um, since Im doing the TDU ride I happen to be going the same direction as these people, not passing the opposite way which is when I wave!

But it seems to me that people have a real dislike for being friendly in casual situations so I think I'll just join the masses and ignore the world as well

Out here in the Hills we are a friendly bunch and have a pretty high acknowledgment rate, many waves/nods/finger off the hood. The other day I was out for a jaunt, and apart from the usual waves from fellow cyclists I got;
- A friendly toot from a car after passing me
- wave from a truck driver
- two girls out the front of their house clapped and whistled as I went by - dont know what that was about
- a series of waves from a motor bike club out for their Sunday ride.

All very nice, but had me confused. Was there some special event on for pudgy middle-aged guys I was allegedly partaking in?

So when I wave to somebody and they don't wave back, it shows they are quite dense?
