Anyone has the same thing before?

Hi to all

I am a newbie in SA and I am not much of a all-time cyclist, just a grad student.

Lately there has been multiple theft of bikes in North Terrace Campus of University of Adelaide and UniSA.

It has not been clear about these theft of bikes (apparently reporting to police seems to be daunting), but there has been about more than 14 bikes missing in the campus in the past few weeks, I got my bike stolen in a protected storage facility (student/staff id is needed for entry), after I got back from the family reunion in NSW, it was stolen. Later I went back and told my mates about this, they said they had their bicycles stolen not a long time ago.

Yesterday, my roomie got his bike pinched too.

If there's any students or uni staff in this forum, please reply this post, cuz I want to figure this out.

Big thanks

Thanks for the heads-up!!! I work at the RAH on North Tce but always take the bike into the office, i dont trust the bike lockup sheds(we have them at the RAH too). I guess you cant take your bike into a lecture...

PS whats the best lock to buy?

Kryptonite or Abus u-lock. Get the small one - besides being lighter and easier to carry, it gives thieves less room to get a car jack in to prise it apart without damaging the bike, which defeats the purpose.

I'd also get a heavy cable lock. Thieves will carry what they need to defeat one style of lock but apparently are less likely to carry tools for both.

I work at Adel Uni and bikes are being stolen from outside our building all the time....one every couple of weeks. My commuter had the seat and wheels stolen on separate days within 2 weeks of we starting work here. Stuff goes missing from inside the building too...wallets, computers, handbags etc. Being close to the city you just have to put up with the fact that the campus is an easy target for thieves. The "secure" bike lockers are not really any more secure than just locking your bike up outside. Hundreds of people probably have access to the lock-ups via their staff/student cards. Bike thieves walk around with those big cable cutters in their clothing bags and can cut through most locks pretty quickly and be off before anyone notices. The only really safe place is your office, if you have one, and keeping the door to your office locked at all times. At the end of the day, bike thefts are pretty low on the list of priorities for the police and Uni security. Most bikes stolen are worth much less than $1000 and unless someone gets hurt during the theft, its just another of the hundreds of property crimes that occur in SA every day of the year.

You're much better off leaving your bike in a busy area (preferably near a much more expensive bike). Those bike sheds near the Bar Smith Lawns are very secluded.

I like the idea of carrying two differn't types of locks... very smart!

How do Kryptonite stack-up these days? To be honest I lost faith in them since the inside of a Bic pen could open the round key-type U-lock.... What a PR disaster!!

I might need to look into a Abus U-Lock and a Motorcycle chain-lock?
