Postby davidk » Thu Jan 13, 2011 4:49 pm

So, who is going to ride with Lance Armstrong this Saturday starting at 10am from Wigley Reserve, Glenelg?

is there a route it follows or is it made up as he rides?, just trying to work out whether I ride down to Glenelg or drive.

Last year the route was over the King St bridge then follow Military Rd/Seaview Rd up to the Bower Rd roundabout near Semaphore and back the same way. I hope he changes it around this year. In any case it will probably be flat and windy.

I didnt go last year, but Im guessing all sorts will flock to this ridie, including many who have no idea how to ride an huge groups - hmm, sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Id hate to be brought down by a 'first timer' a day before the RLC ride.

The chaos up the Expressway on the Amy ride was bad enough!

Ill give it a miss - my my lack of speed, Id never get anywhere near Lance to get a glimpse of him anyway.

I understand your concern, but isnt this several pro's riding with heaps of "first timers".They seem to be prepared to take the risk with a fair bit at stake. I do agree though and will be happy gorge road and checkers will not be too busy for my saturday morning ride

This is the same reason I'll skip it. I'll go for a gentle roll in the afternoon instead.

Except the pros will charge to the front of the pack, put the pace on a little to stretch out the group, and stay at the front. Just like the TdF, the safest place for any rider is at the front. No-one can fall in front of them. But in the middle somewhere, keep on your toes.

There is definitely a need to keep your wits about you if going in lance ride. I remember last year when a female rider had a stack just over the bridge. Went to slow and was to uncoordinated to unclip. She managed to get back up only to stack it again right away! Couldn't help but giggle! There was quite a few below average riders, that gave us a giggle!

Last year a couple of us just stuck together and made sure we were very aware and quick to respond.

The way some of you are going on, I'd be surprised if you ever rode except when on a stationary trainer. Riding on the road is certainly too dangerous.

TBH I was a 'first timer' at last year's twitter ride. I never felt at risk. Worst case is you may need to ride a bit slower but that's fine - it's not a race, y'know?

Just spin, enjoy and play a part in supporting LA's livestrong message, the flood victims and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Cyclists in every other city would love to have this opportunity.

Having said that, do what you want :)

There'll be a few first timers on RLC too, are people going to stay away from that ride. I'll be there, just got to keep your wits about you, it'll be safer than mixing it with peak hour traffic.

I saw a couple of clip stacks but no one got taken out as a result. I only started riding 4 months before last years ride. I didn't consider it at all dangerous.
Of course Lance and the pro's will stick to the front, they have a lot more to lose than any of us. Most of my mates will be there and ride the RLC on Sunday too.

I didn't do the Twitter ride. As a member of Cancer Voices cycling team we were privileged to ride in to Glenelg from the tour village with Lance and the Radio Shack team. An awesome ride with a police escort all the way down Anzac Hwy. Started with about 100 of us and probably swelled to double that by the time we reached the bay. Hopefully the photos on the phone camera turn out, Lance even wore one of our jerseys on the ride down as a show of respect for our founder although he put a team jersey on for the Twitter ride. a ride that will stay with me for a long time.

Yup, although a feeling somewhat offset by a quick 40km down to Torquay this morning... Perfect morning for it.

Not one of mine. Lance and Ashleigh (founder of CVSA) chat before the ride.

Was a great morning for a ride.

Someone did go down and there was some bark lost. On the whole a safe ride, lots of hand signals. I didn't see anyone riding like a moron. Plenty of "wrong side of the road" stuff sanctioned by the Police  ie They were there and didn't book anyone.

Cheers
