Magpies already?

I couldn't believe it when I was swooped by a magpie this morning - Swap Road, Piccadilly SA. Would that be the first of the 2012 season or the last of the 2011 season?

Have passed many, this year and last, and have been treated well by those nice birds*

The heat leading to increased competition for food and water? Even the sparrows in our backyard have become pushy.
