Hi,
Enjoying reading the forum which i have just recently joined.
Pretty much amateur here being doing a few rides on tracks around town of late.
Ride 2001 Giant Boulder SE MTB.
Couple of days ago did ride - Gundaroo to Murrumbateman via Yass River Rd, Greenwood Rd (?) and Hillview into Murrumbateman with return to Gundaroo via Dicks Creek and Tass River rd. total 67kms - a rcord for me.
Found it hard going but loved it (apart from a few bad corrugations on unsealed part).
Took me 4hrs 40min in saddle with 30min break at Murrumbateman.... walked the ends of a few hills as didnt want to overdo it on my longest ride ever!

Thinking of heading down coast CBR ,QBN, Captains Flat, Majors Creek finishing Moruya. Thinking to do it over 3 days so about 55km per day...

Anyone comment of terrain of latter ride visa via the former and am I biting of too much ? I have done a couple of 50-60k rides round lakes etc in CBR lately which i suspect are lot easier but done those at about 18km /hr so figure I can cover 55km rough in a full day !

I am not interested in speed but rather enjoying the ride and scenery.

Your comments appreciated.
Thank you .

Congratulations - and offroad making it tougher. Nice ride though!

It is an awesome ride, I've done it on a hard tail mtb and on my Jake the Snake (cyclocross). From Araluen to Moruya is pretty corrugated, and you need to just be very aware of the traffic (it's low but some of the guys can fly along the dirt).

Where are you considering taking your overnight stops? Obivously Araluen for the second night. Also consider water.

Have you mapped the ride in Bikely or mapmyride.com and checked the ride profile?

Russ.

Russ,

Thank you for welcome and reply

Stopovers.... Day 1: Canberra - Captains Flat. Day 2: Captains Flat - Majors Creek - Araluen. Day 3: Araluen - Moruya . My reading of map suggests legs approx 55kms.

Someone has done mapping for me

with map at

Excuse my ignorance - what is a hard tail mtb ?

Albert

What would you do for the other 10-12 hours a day? Surely, your leg strength and fitness will get up and you can do more than 55 k a day?

This route/ride has been discussed at length in at least one other thread on the forum so try searching for it.

I'm not overly familiar with the terrain of the ride you did but have done Canberra to the coast three times and Canberra to Araluen once, though not via Captains Flat - we used to take a short cut from Hoskinstown thru Rossi and Tallaganda Forest. How much of your Gundaroo ride was unsealed? Because your proposed ride on days 2 and 3 is almost entirely on dirt, so doing some training which give you a chance to get used to this would be good. Riding on dirt roads is harder on your body than sealed roads over the same terrain.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any decent length dirt stretches close to Canberra - anyone? You could get a fair whack of dirt trail riding in around the hills in town. From Watson around the back of Hackett, then over the ridge towards the airport and along to Campbell Park offices then back past the War Memorial and return. Or from the Cork Oaks through the Arboretum and down the trail under the power lines to Coppins Crossing, then up through Bluetts Forest to Stromlo, Duffy, Chapman and then into Kambah or Mt Taylor reserve. Sorry, just thinking aloud now. If you aren't familiar with these let me know and I can plot something out with Mapmyride.

Even though you're riding a mtb, I'd invest in some semi-slicks because you really don't need full knobblies for this type of thing.

The climb out of Captains Flat on the 2nd morning will warm your legs up plenty!

Are you going to carry your gear, or get someone to meet up with you at the overnights?
