WETLANDS CYCLE PATH OPEN FOR USE

The ACT Government has completed an 880-metre off-road cycle path along the East Basin of Lake Burley Griffin through the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve, Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope said today.

The cycle path connects to the existing paths on Newcastle Street and Dairy Flat Road.

“Previously cyclists were using the walking path through the nature reserve to commute between Kingston and the northern foreshores of the Lake,” Mr Stanhope said. “This path was unsuitable for cyclists and its continued use was causing the path to degrade rapidly.

“The new path gives cyclists a dedicated route through the nature reserve that is separate to the pedestrian path except for the shared bridge across the Jerrabomberra Pond, which was widened as part of the works.

Other works currently under way, or due to start this year, include:
•Directional signs for paths connecting major town centres and signs around the four lake paths - Burley Griffin, Tuggeranong, Ginninderra and Yerrabi Pond.
•An on-road cycle path on Ginninderra Drive from the intersection with Coulter Drive to the intersection with Diddams Close;
•A shared use path on the Southwell Park side of Mouat Street from Riggall Place to Northbourne Avenue, including a signalised crossing on Mouat Street at the Sullivans Creek main community path junction; and
•New signs on the main community paths from the City to Belconnen from Dryandra Street to Belconnen including around Lake Ginninderra.

Has been open for at least a month. Makes a nice pleasant ride out of the whole lake.
