There's just one week to go until Ride to Work Day 2011 - Wednesday 12th October - what do you have planned?
At our event in Glebe Park there will be some excellent food provided by Lend Lease and Baker's Delight. We'll also have some giveaways of bike gear, music and TREK will be bringing along some shiny new bikes to show off. A team of physios will also be on hand to help with any aches and pains and make sure your bike fits you properly to eliminate any niggles.
We also have some notable attendees:
Simon Corbell, Caroline Le Couteur and Alistair Coe (MLAs with transport brief their respective parties) will ride from Legislative assembly around the majority of the Civic Cycle loop to end at Glebe Park – expect to see them at Glebe Park around 8am
Mark Dreyfuss, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency is going to lead a ride from his department to the breakfast and then ride onto Parliament to take part ion the morning's debate on Climate Change
So come along to Glebe Park between 7am and 9am.
If you would like to tell us how you are fitting your Ride to Work day breakfast into your busy schedule we'd love to hear from you..
Get creative and win a new TREK bike
ABC 666 in Canberra are holding their own breakfast event, open to all, at their Northbourne studios in Dickson (use the Dooring St entrance).
As part of the promotion of Ride to Work Day on their breakfast show they are also running a competition for any budding poets or lyricists keen to get their hands on a new bike to ride to work on. They have a bicycle to give to a listener who's without wheels but with a sharp wit.
All you need to do is take the first four lines of A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson's poem, 'Mulga Bill's Bicycle', and update them to reflect you in Canberra in 2011.
Here's Banjo Paterson's original words:
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze,
He turned away the good old horse that served him many days,
He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen,
He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine'
Keep an eye on their website or ring 666 ABC Canberra Breakfast on Friday 7 October on 1300 681 666 between 5.30 and 9am with your entry; selected entrants will be invited to read their entry to air. The entry that tickles their fancy the most will win the wheels.

I always happen to be out of town or leaving town on ride to work day. This year is no exception, off to Melb at lunch so can't ride in .

Hmmm. Rider down at the new bike crossing on Mouat Street, MTB was leaning up against a pole and the police were breathalysing the driver, rising sun wasn't a factor as the car was heading towards Ginninderra drive.
I ride, therefore I am. But don't ride into harm's way.

I rode (as per usual) but went went to have a look at the breakfast do. there were probably 50-60 riders there but others were coming and going the whole time. I got there about 8.15 so didn't know who was speaking. Saw John Armstrong introducing Matt from PP and a foreign sounding chap saying please ring your bell and slow down as you pass pedestrians.
grabbed a sausage sandich and a fruit bun, ate it and left. Saw a couple of mates and had a bit of a chat but didn't speak to anyone i didn't know. Most people looked like they rode regularly - ie they had the gear, looked fit and had hot legs! but there were a few weird and whacky and odd home made bikes - you know the type where you sit 4 foot above the ground and it looks like 2 frames welded on top of each other, or chopper style with the front wheel about 5 foot out the front. I saw a couple with flowing black scarves or capes or something on that gave me flashbacks of Isadora Duncan and could just imagine this girl's garb getting caught up in her back cogs and strangling her instantaneously.
I didn't notice any more bikes coming in than i normally do - and didn't spot any obvious newies on my route.

Apparently the driver just drove straight through the red light (didn't see it?!) and collected the rider as he was making his way across the crossing.twizzle wrote:Hmmm.
