I ride there regularly, without the parking spots, the cars (in general) wouldn't be there. Sooooooo sick of people using the side roads for U-turns across unbroken white lines and going through the stop signs, or doing three-point-turns in the middle of the street, plus stupid peds walking out between cars because they can't be bothered walking to a ped crossing.

Close it to everything except service vehicles and get rid of all of the parking spots. Problems solved.

I already left feedback on the page - I made two suggestions. The first was the one I posted here - remove the parking. It'll give cars less reason to be there.

The second suggestion was exactly what you've said - close it to all but service vehicles and cabs.

Incredible that 3 urban planners have been paid for these rubbish plans, when a lay person driver/cyclist/pedestrian like me was able to come up with 2 better ideas than any of their three.

I'm glad I didnt buy a copy of the Canberra and Queanbeyan Cycle path map when I was at the LBS on Saturday.

An updated map, literally released today:

http://images.canberratimes.com.au/file ... clemap.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You mightve heard the beat-up upon its release because it includes paths that are only in the "proposed" stage at this point.

In other news, Pedal Power announced their preferred option for Bunda St as a shared zone. To say that I think this decision is bizarre isn't going far enough.

Stupid more adequately describes it. How can a "people who ride a bike" (cant say cyclist) advocacy group be promoting a solution that puts us at risk from cars, and from pedestrians (and pedestrians at risk from us)? Its not enough that we deal with cars on the road, and pedestrians on shared paths - lets mix them all together? (Looking at that map, it doesn't even have a key for "bikes only zone" - there aren't any!)

What a joke - the correct answer from Pedal power was what a couple of us have said here. None of those proposals are adequate - if you want to create a safe area for pedestrians and cyclists in a built up area, without the mindless hyperbole that cyclists run this town - remove the parking!!!
