and another one I've just heard on the 7 am news this morning - an incident between car and bike in the vicinity of Monaro Highway and Rose Cottage - is that the Isabella Drive roundabout? hope whoever that is is okay too. The cyclist in the above incident was also listed as critical. :(

Narelle Johnston Actually considering there was a 2 car crash at the exact same intersection last week don't be surprised if it was the result of an impatient motorist crossing Ainslie Ave - I see it every day driving there - people racing the oncoming traffic and risking being t-boned

Jody Crawford We saw the police arriving and people assisting just after it happened. Awful. The driver would have been looking straight into the sun. I'm sure that regardless of who did what, it was an accident. Hoping cyclist and driver is ok. Driver looked to be in shock.

Jody Crawford Lisa Jackson - would have been taken to hospital. Ambulance was on way, shock blanket was on cyclist and cyclist was out cold and in recovery position.

Lisa Jackson Jody Crawford the reason I asked because it was confussed the 2nd esa update refered to 'they' I wasn't sure if esa meant they as in the driver and the cyclist !! Thats all not meant as any criticism read my submission to ACT vulnerable road users inquiry The Standing Committee on Planning, Environment and Territory and Municipal Services is holding a public hearing for its inquiry into Vulnerable Road Users tomorrow which I plan to attend. Miss undetstanding I think?

Jody Crawford Wasn't at all taken as a criticism Lisa. Just figured u were concerned - I read the ESA report and was also confused by the use of "they". Am assuming "they" was meant to not assign gender to the driver, to protect privacy. Was just wanting to let u know what we saw.

The cyclist who was killed was allegedly a firebug as well - http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-new ... 33ism.html

Thanks Ross

I was struggling to understand the circumstances of the collision in that the reports suggest that a rider, faced with a stop sign and a reasonably good view of a straight section of road somehow rode into the path of a car.

It appears that there may have been other issues involved

while the outcome is obviously bad - I wonder again whether the media is playing on the word cyclist. None of us know whether the driver had a green light and was travelling through at 60 kmph and hit him on the red, or whether he was a red light runner.

but I guess the point is whether this guy was a cyclist as opposed to a person on a bicycle. if you're a cyclist - in my mind that goes with the rules and responsibilities that go with cycling. eg riding safely and considerately and obeying the rules of the road. whether he did that or not none of us know.

or was he perhaps just a bogan bloke on a bike. the area is full of dodgy flats and a lot of dodgy people. regardless of who was at fault, it is also completely possible that there is a driver out there who is emotionally and mentally stuffed for the rest of his life now due to absolutely no fault of his own.

There was another story in the Canberra Times yesterday that I didn't bother to post the link to where the paper suggested that there was no evidence to suggest the car driver deliberately ran the rider down. A complete non-story, nothing I've read about this incident so far even vaguely hinted this. Why didn't they publish an article saying there was "no evidence aliens were to blame" or "no evidence pink elephants were to blame"? Equally as relevant. :?
