To anyone who may be interested. I went down and looked at the bikes and the one I was wanting to check out. Unfortunately it was a small but.... its a Giant Defy 2 2012. Some rust on the chain and the RD wasn't attached properly. I cant tell if it was snapped etc. As mentioned it is the small though. Apart from that I would say that the bike is in excellent condition considering. Not knowing how much bikes go for at the auctions but it might be possible to get a real bargain here. There are loads of bikes (mostly junky) and if it was the next size up I would be all over it hoping to get it sub $150.0 If you are interested it is Lot 150 Cheers

Went and had a look with J4HBT about 3pm, pretty much what I expected. A lot of junk with one or two curiosities. The ex-WA Police MTBs probably the most interesting. 10-12 individual bikes in various states of mongrelisation, Mixture of midrange components, with hydraulic brakes Hayes & Shimano. One lot of about 6 Police bikes plastic wrapped on a pallet. We thought this sorry lot was the wrecking pile of donors for the other lot before they were retired. Purportedly Diamondback & Specialized frames.
Got a few lot numbers scribbled down and my limits set for this morning.

I'm glad I didn't go down now, I was planning to buy the Defi for the Mrs but it would be too small. Be interesting to know what it sells for.
Did anyone end up going down?

Well, I feel a bit better as a discerning scab now. Most stuff went for what I considered way too much. These sort of auctions bring all of the bugs, slugs & oppurtunists out of the woodwork. Some obviously a lot less informed than others.
The Defy went for $400. Considering you'd probably have to spend about another $100 or so on new parts (or parts & labour if you're not so handy yourself) You'd be better off getting newie from a LBS with a similar level of componetry for not much more AND some sort of warranty. The Birdy Folder went for $180. A couple of the half decent kids/teenagers trials bikes upwards of $200-300
Each of the ex Police MTBs went for an average of $120-150. I would'nt have paid more than about $50 for one of 'em. The pallet of busted up Police MTBs went for $400.
My favourite was the Triax (K-Mart) racer going for $275. I recall seeing them new for $120. There was a guy in front of me bidding on it. I was so tempted to tap him on the shoulder to let him know.
Anyway, it was interesting exercise.

Was that a white birdie with Alivio RD? There was one such one on Gumtree for ages for a hefty amount, $700-800 that didn't seem to sell. IIRC it was in Balga so wonder if the same then they got broken into edit: OK not the one unless resprayed pale blue =D

Nah, it was a pale-ish blue one. It didn't look particularly used per se, just a bit neglected. Just4tehhalibut may be able to answer more specific questions about it than I could.

Yikes $400 is crazy. I am glad it was to small otherwise i would have had to have made a wasted trip today. LOL on the Triax. A mate of mine found one in the kerb collections and gave it to me thinking I would want it. Didn't have the heart to tell him it was a piece-o-junk. Hmm maybe I can get several hundred $ for it

Wow. Blown away by some people at these auctions, I guess it happens at all of them. I regularly put in generous absentee bids on other auctions, and out of approximately 40-50 bids over the last 2 years, I have won 3 items. Good to know the Triax is going to a good home with Huffys, and a butch of new Repcos. Obviously a K-mart collector.

I registered as a buyer when inspecting later in the day on Tuesday and was having a laugh with one of office ladies. I said "I bet you get some wierdos coming through here, don't you?" She said "Yeah, the Police auctions tend to bring out some of the best."
I think its some sort of bottom-feeder circle of life thing. Seized from .... only to be later bought back by ... ?
I wonder if PC Moody is pumping the pedals on a 29er these days?

Probably like the nut jobs who buy scavenger passes from the tip. My God that was an experience!
