Ride for Change 2010
A leisurely ride from Perth to Freo to support the Walk Against Warming and meaningful action on climate change.
All ages, all cycles, all fitness levels welcome!
...
Estimated departure from Perth Cultural Centre, Northbridge: 10.05am
Estimated arrival in Fremantle (prior to conducting the celebratory critical mass circuit): 11.20-30am.
Estimated arrival at Esplanade Park: 11.45-11.50am.
Walk Against Warming Start: 12 midday.
What to bring /wear:
-Helmet
-Water bottle and snack/sweets (esp. if cycling with children)
-Bike lock for use at destination
-Smartrider/change for train (as back-up and for return journey)
-Bright clothing
-Bike bell
Other tips:
-Check your bike now for flat tyres, brakes not working.
-Eat breakfast on the day and make sure you are hydrated before you start.
-Consider the weather: bring suncream/hat.
Suggestions for joining the ride part-way:
**The Perth-Freo Principal Shared Path (bike path) ends at Grant Street Train Station in Cottesloe and after that, we will be using a mixture of cyle lanes on the side of the road, the coastal path and/or residential roads to get into Freo. There will be enough of us to ensure that we are as safe as possible but if you want to avoid roads altogether, this is the section to miss by hopping onto the train at Claremont or Grant St.***
Other options for meeting the ride part way:
* Subiaco - where the City to Fremantle Principle Shared Path (PSP) passes by the intersection of Rokeby Road and Roberts Road, in front of Wagamamas (i.e. bottom end of Rokeby Rd - NOT at Subi Train Station itself).
* Anywhere along the City-Fremantle PSP as it runs along the western (coastal) side of the Perth-Fremantle Train Line between Subi and Grant Street Train Station.
* After Grant Street, we will be cutting through Cottesloe and (probably) taking the coastal path as far as Leighton Beach before entering Fremantle on the path over the Old Traffic Bridge and into central Fremantle via Elder Place (the road that runs along closest to the train tracks/harbour).
* However, please note that building works along the coastal path near Leighton may require a slight change of plan for the Cottesloe-Leighton section.

The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.

I'm tempted. I need to get some more distance under me. Maybe I can get the family to meet up at the Esplanade in Freo too.
But obvioulsy I am not gonna ride 21km from Perth to Freo in an hour and a half - a two hour time would be quite laudatory. But there is little to stop me from hopping the train for a few stations in order to get ahead a little. Or simply take off earlier.
So, just to confirm, there is a PSP running the whole of the way alongside the railway track? Is that right? (I'm a south of the river person.)

The PSP goes to Grant Street, from there on its roads.
