Hard to get lost ... June 5 works for me. BTW the trail starts at the foothills so a 8:00 AM start wouldn't match with the train unless you make the train station the start point and ride up to the trail head. Andrew

rolandp wrote:Hi, there have been several posts on MTB, and if anyone would like to give this a go, then I suggest a Forum Ride on Sunday..snip.. starting at 8:00 at the Midland Train Station (train arrives at 7:55am). If you haven't done this loop, then check out Railway Reserve. It is following the old railway route through John Forrest, joining up to the Mundai Biddi trail down to Mundaring Weir Hotel for lunch/coffee, and then back down the Railway Reserve via Darlington etc. Total distance is around 35-40Km, on loose gravel, with the exception of the Mundai Biddi section which is dirt, and some back-roads of Midland to get to the start. ....snip...
The Train station is somewhere to park your car, it's central and easy to find, if you catch the train you will be riding from the train station anyway

There is parking at the trailhead ... I had just assumed that the ride was starting at 8:00 AM at the trail head; I didn't realise that the past ride information was applying this time around as well. As it is starting effectively later I will pass as it is starting to push out too late for me. Enjoy your ride. Andrew

mitzikatzi, the last time this was organised, there was no-one who took the train option, and we met up Miller St/Purton Place, where there is plenty of parking: Let's make the start point here. NearMap shows this as Miller St/Purton Place. The North section is then just up Miller St (the way we will go up to Mundaring), and the South section which we finish at will be here.
I've done the trip from the Midland Station and from other sections of Midland before, and to be honest, and no disrespect to anyone who lives in Midland, it is a boring ride either by some of the back roads, or along Great Eastern Hway. If anyone is taking the train, and I can make the ride, I'm more than happy to pick them up from the station, as it is around a 15-20 minute ride to the trail start. It is a good ride, so hopefully we can do it again as a forum ride.

If someone knows the way or wants to risk getting lost with me Sunday 28th of May or 5th of June at 0800hrs (so you can catch the train that arrives at 0800) I am keen anyone else? I am happy to ride both weeks.
Hi Mitzikatzi, are you doing the ride tomorrow?

I guess I could get talked into it. I just got back from doing the ride.
At Sawyers Valley I couldn't see how the Rail Trail took you up to Mt Helena so I rode on the road. After you cross Sawyers Road where does the Trail start to travel North? Or is that the trail and it just veers around?

Anyone doing the PIHC Kep Track adventure thingo from Northam back to Mundaring tomorrow? I'm giving it a bash with a couple of work mates. Got my contact in Greenmount fetching my vehicle from Mundaring back to his place so we get the joy of getting the final descent from the scarp in
Kym All manner of half finished projects and a bit of randonneuring I used to be tech-savvy. Now I'm just tech-weary.

Have fun. It is not a bad ride. I have down the Mundaring - Northam - Mundaring in a day ride which makes it a good solid ride. Andrew

Change of plans for me and mitzikatzi, and we've had to cancel tomorrows ride.
I'll be doing parts of the Railway Reserve/Kep Trail but too late to organise anything formal.

I rode from Swan View to Wooroloo, round trip around 66km. This was by the NOrth Railway Reserves Heritage Trail. The Kep trail is part of this section from Mt Helena. I tracked the return ride by Endomondo if you want to see how I went. I kept my eyes out for the 150 odd people doing the PIHC Kep Track Adventure today, but I must have been too early. I did see the Masters races at Chidlow though, I kept popping out of the trail at road junctions and on three occassions they were on that road.

Kep Track Ultra Marathon is on this week-end (Sunday 5th June 2011). Look out for extra runners on the trail if you are riding that way on Sunday. My brother is doing the 75km event.

Hi All, My first post here. I ride this loop all the time, I work right next door to the head of trail and live in Mt Helena so its actually my commute. If i wasn't already riding to Mandurah I'd join you. I'm leaving work at 7.30am so may see you gathering.
Enjoy
It's a great night ride as well.

Just got back from doing this ride today, it's pretty awesome. Did the full railway reserve loop plus a side trip on the Kep to Chidlow. Some of the gravel surfaces are as good as bitumen. The views on the north section are great, beautiful clear day for them too. Lots of bikes out, heaps of families wandering about in the vicinity of the tunnel

@Robert Thanks I rode the "loop" on Saturday. The world looks different through the lense of a Camera and I didn't recognize the section of path.

I did the Kep track to Northam yesterday, 144km return. Backwards trip captured on Endomondo. Fantastic weather, wouldn't believe it was Winter. Saw my brother on the Kep Marathon, he finished the 75km in 8 hours

Anyone up for a ride from Midland to Mundaring in a few weeks time? I'm kicking off my tour of the Mundi Biddi starting out from Midland. My plans for Perth - Sydney got killed for a variety of reasons, so this is my solution Mundaring to Manjimup and then a little bit further. Where I get to will depend on how long the Mundi Biddi takes.

I'm conspiring with TNT who can be found in Touring Australia, he lands on 6th Sept, so could be the following weekend. Will keep posted.

I'm interested, provided that it's on a weekend that I'm not on-call with work.

Date is firming as the 17th. Back on the bike now doing 50km rides and hope to be able to do 80km soon. Ride will either or not happen on this date. 2 reasons I might be going off with TNT to norseman and then doing something else, or I'm not touring at all and I won't be too happy with that.
