Police probe cycle star's death

Postby Aushiker » Wed Mar 16, 2011 1:56 pm

Hi

From the Western Australian today ...

Police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old former WA Institute of Sport cyclist who died from an overdose of the narcotic painkiller OxyContin after allegedly being prescribed 20 tablets of the potentially lethal drug.

Bibra Lake resident Daniel Hall was found dead in July by his mother Monique after taking up to eight of the 80mg painkillers - known in America as "hillbilly heroin" - within 24 hours.

Twenty tablets of the drug had allegedly been prescribed to him two days earlier at a day clinic in Perth's inner suburbs after surgery to remove a benign tumour from his nose, with Mr Hall issued the dose despite having a history of prescription drug abuse.

So it's a former institute's rider, hardly a star by any imagination. And the episode doesn't seem to have much to do with cycling.

Daniels death has plenty to do with cycling in WA.

By the way have you seen the riders on the WAIS squad? Good luck just anybody getting on that squad....

Meaning you obviously don't know the Hall family, what they do and have done for cycling in WA and how this has affected them.

You mentioned he was just a former institute rider. Perhaps you should check out who some of our current institute riders are then think about the talent he must have had just to make the institute squad.

Sure his cause of death doesn't relate directly to cycling, but none the less it has impacted cycling in WA and this is in the WA section.

If so, then it's worth providing additional description. Otherwise based on what's posted, it's hard to link with the thread title.

Here is a few of those Dunk was tryin to think of

"Headlining the WAIS charge are current world champions Cameron Meyer, Josie Tomic and Sarah Kent, whilst Scott Sunderland will line-up alongside debutants Luke Durbridge, Michael Freiberg and Melissa Hoskins."

Get the idea now sogood?

I understand the standard of WAIS, but the deceased was not one of those listed and based on the report, he have had a long history of drug problems. Given how the report was presented with the cycling link, my unfortunate first thought was whether it was a sports doping problem. I am just glad it wasn't, but an individual's downfall on drug.

Well, he won't be abusing drugs any more. :|

As tough as the situation is for family and friends, by the sound of things he was a timebomb waiting to go off. You can't protect people from themselves forever. Eventually someone will slip up and an opportunity for abuse will open.

Condolences to famly and friends.
