It appears that the info has not got as far as the freewaybikehike.com.au website yet, but I have been able to get some times. I don't have Joondalup times, but this might be able to at least give people an idea of times proposed.
Note - this is by no means official and may change

Code: Select all

Clarkson Esplanade Kwinana
  0517 0550 0615
  0532 0605 0630
  0547 0620 0645
  0639 0714
  0658 0731
  0713 0746
Finalised info as well as 2 route maps (Esplanade -> Belmont Park) should be available here on Tuesday or Wednesday.

My wife has surprisingly offered to drive a mate, my son and myself to Kwinana at 6am on Sunday. Not very often that she will sacrifice her Sunday morning sleep in!!!

What a great help - THANKS :D :D :D

And 3 cheers for the wife too (but, being a wife myself, I reckon there will be a favour owing somewhere along the line  ).

I hope she doesn't want to return via the freeway. I hear there is something on that day which might inconvenience car drivers. 8)

Geez their web site sucks - still!

Okay, since there is no useful ride information for participants on the web site, can anyone tell me if there are places along the ride where water can be obtained? I want to know if I need to carry enough water for two hours from the start.

Cheers,
Graeme

Hi Graeme,

There's plenty of drinking stations along the way on the freeway. Make sure you keep a wide berth if you don't intend to take a drink - it's not exactly done in Tour De France style from memory!

Cheers,

Gary

Grahame, will you be riding back south too?
Yep, I'm pretty sure I'll be riding back south. The guys at the WAHPV are putting on a few drinks afterwards another 5km up the track, but I'm not sure if I have the time to go along to that.
I have registered for the C group and hope to do it in 2.5 hours, so I reckon yourself and Jason will be well ahead of me. I would suggest you guys just head on home and I will cruise along later on. No point waiting for this slow coach.

Thanks Gary. At least somebody here knows what's going on .... :)

Looks like the weather is going to play nice for us too. After the seven day forecast initially had us down for rain on Sunday, they now say fine, sunny and mid twenties after 13 over night.

Cheers,
Graeme

Stickers and adverts usually. The Powerade is a new addition - previous years you were handed Mizone when you finished (or 4 if you worked it right). This is a first for Powerade - I hope they have one at the end too and they are more readily available than at the Great Perth Bike Ride!!

Which won't even make it out the front door of the collection point, in my case.

I assume there's some important stuff there. Try phoning them up to see if there really is anything that we need.

Graeme

Number? Some sort of timing tag maybe?

No timing tag for the last couple of years. Last year was a sticker for your helmet and the previous year it was wrapped on the frame / seat post on your bike. The rest of the pack contained promotional material from memory.

I can't recall any EPO or blood doping products. (Well that's what Lance told me to say!)

Cheers,

Gary

The best "performance enhancement" they could have done would be to hold the damn thing in the afternoon with the Fremantle Doctor helping you all the way north :D

Woohoo wouldn't that be fun!! :P

From the relevant page -
"All participants must pick up their Participant Pack. The Participant pack contains your event number which is compulsory to wear during the event so we can identify who you are. The event number is made up of three parts - one for your bike seat post and two for your helmet (each side). Anyone without a race number will not be allowed to start the event."

If the bike sticker is anything like the Great Bike Ride, I found that by peeling a little bike of backing off each end sticker, you can place both ends together in a loop around what ever part of your bike and avoid having nasty sticky things on your pristine machine.

I'll hopefully be grabbing my bag tomorrow and see what goodies are inside.

Not sure, but that wouldn't surprise me to ensure others paid for the train.

It was very busy heading back the last few years - long, long line at joondalup station - so the trains may be specific ones (at first) and then normal trains where you fit where you can. It is a Sunday though and security is a bit quieter on those days though so you never know.

If you do plan to take the train south, either spend time looking around joondalup first, or ride like crazy so you can be one of the first on the return trains :)

Who was planning to catch the train in from Thornlie or Armadale?

TransPerth has cancelled all trains on those lines from tonight until Monday.

Even though I wrote this nearly 2 weeks ago, I forgot about it myself. My mate was meant to be jumping on a train to overnight at our place before heading off to Kwinana. I'm toying with the idea of taking my work car into the City and biking back down the Armadale line tomorrow, and then biking back to the car (if I'm still moving) after the Freeway ride.
Whereareweridingtoday has a 'Freeway Bikehike Return Ride' which I'm considering, or if there is a BNA group heading south maybe? The train is always a handy backup - if it is running!!!. :D

Just the 30km Group E [60-75min] ride for me. I probably could have done the 60km w/out too much fuss [in the slow group] but the run through the tunnel at the start is the best part about the whole ride. Last year I did it in 72mins on my mountain bike with slick tyres and zero training, so fingers crossed I'll smash that time on my new-old roadie.

Last year I parked at the Burswood near the dome as did tonnes of other people. Quick trip past the tennis centre to Belmont Park before waiting around in the herding yards till start time.

Unfortunately if the trains from Joondalup aren't goin back to Belmont like they did last year it means I'll have to do a teeny bit of extra peddling from the Esplanade to Burswood, which is fine.

So if anyone sees this thing with a dude in a navy soccer jersey and brown shy shorts, that'd be me [Michael] so say G'day. Have a great ride all.
