Postby CycleSnail » Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:07 pm

On the front page, right hand column ~"Perthnow" is conducting a poll on the one meter passing distance. The "nos" are in front. Go and vote! (and tell your friends ....)

poll results are truly depressing.

1m?

it would appear that asking for 1m is like asking for a kidney.

perhaps we could relocate this thread to the general discussion page?

not neccessarily trying to gain more yes votes for the sake of it, just, er, . . . .well it is a general issue

I wonder if the no vote is high because some have cleared their cookies and voted several times?

Just voted (Yes).

Half way down right hand side before scrolling anywhere if that helps others find it.

Sad that No is leading. Agree 1m is not like asking for a kidney.

I think the poll result so far illustrates that motorists don't understand the concept of safety on the road.

Or that regular PertNow readers are a skewed demographic? I'm always dubious about giving credence to polls. But it still saddens me, I'm just not sure why.

I think the poll illustrates how THICK the majority of readers of PerthNow are.

And obviously its editors/journalists

"Do you support moves to give cyclists get a 1m buffer zone from passing cars?"

What??

Done. 52% saying no, much better than the comments received on the original article where most of the comments where anti-cycling.

because even with a skewed demographic you realise that there's still a majority of people who would go to the trouble to say "no" to giving a cyclist 1m of room.

1m?!?!? it's nothing! not even an armspan.

that's how messed up and selfish a majority of people* are in this day and age.

This poll is still active. When I voted it was at around 52%, now it is down to 50.7%, so going in the direction we want. Given that 2,792 people have said 'yes', can we present this as effidence to Minister of Transport, similar to what these guys via facebookdid for a after mid-night train costing $1M trial. Only happens in Perth.

The rather depressing thing I've just noticed is that the poll is off the front page, but the headline story is of the cyclist who was killed in a hit and run... :( :(

It just goes to show how dangerous it is on Australian roads. I presume the people that are clicking 'No' drive cars on these roads.

If they saw a pedestrian on the road (which happens pretty regularly, one thing I realised when first moving here was, there's not always footpaths in suburban areas) would they not give them any room either?

Of course drivers give pedestrians space and every day thousands of drivers overtake cyclists at a safe distance.

The tragic death in Cottesloe last night would not have been prevented by a 1 metre passing law or even a 2 metre passing law.

I hope I didn't give the impression that I thought it would have prevented it. I just saw the depressing link between a survey where it seems that a lot of motorists couldn't care less about cyclists safety being gone, but the tragic news being there instead.

Bicycling Western Australia has discovered the issue (sorry for being cynical) and has now posted a survey on the matter of safe passing. You can find it at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/bwamarch2012

PerthNow Poll is closed, results being
Do you support moves to give cyclists get a 1m buffer zone from passing cars?
Yes 45.74% (2993 votes)
No 50.38% (3297 votes)
Don't Know 3.88% (254 votes)

Total votes: 6544

Completed the BWA survey, but as it was only sent onto cyclists, it may be a little biased.

Good results on the PerthNow Poll.

... gee, what about the survey on theBicycle Transport Alliance Facebook page?
35 said yes to one or 1.5 metres, 1 said no (and it is worthwhile to have a look at that person's homepage)
