In the dark tonight, Ambulence having hard time to find them without known crossroad (Tresise Street and Guinevere Way). They were at Carine Open Space west side and making right way after I left not required. Best wishes for riders' recovery.

Cold reminder how a hairy intersection in good weather and vision of daylight can bite quickly with poorer vision at night.

OT: By poorer vision I also mean tonight's reminder the non-dipping disorentation dazzle of MTB offroad design lithium powered LED lights very affordable now continuing this http://lightmare.org/
I've only found this German spec reflector LED so far to address it...

...but would mean getting everyone else to use it too, and still dip/twist/dim etc. the spotlight or helmet light...

Not good news, hate that corner as there are no lights on that no name park (it is not carine open space). Do you have more details as I went through around 6:30pm.

It was probably about 6:45pm. GPS said ~6:53pm I was at the intersection. It also said I was doing 40kph top speed down the hill before it, easing to 38kph last two thirds before getting on the brakes before the tree cover. I had taken it very easy around lots of joggers/walkers of an organised group in the prior section before Reid Hwy.
Reminder to self to take it easier around all the intersections.

There were a couple of hash house runs on tonight based on the number of chalk markings I saw on the way home.

For example
Run No: 520
Date: 16/04/12
Hare: Mankini
Location: Monyash Reserve, Carine
Directions: North on Mitchell, left on Reid Hwy, 1st right on Duffy Rd, near the end, turn into carpark on south side of the club rooms.
 
Always slow down for that corner as it is a dog leg.

I heard them calling "hash bike" and first impression was it resembled something of a mature men's poker club that dared itself to go for a half marathon run to pay a debt... but I wasn't about to jump to any conclusions. I didn't see them right near the bike incident dogleg though so won't assume they caused it. A mobile poker strike of hash runners. Sounds like a night in Amsterdam.

PS: I noticed the fencing going up along the path closer to Warwick Station from the dogleg with cheese grater edge is at ~1.8m normal house fence height versus the Karrinyup Rd. section.
They also didn't leave the concrete based poles at side of path for 2 weeks either and path with sections of sand to washout at fastest point at valley of the hill like Karrinyup has now.

Wasn't indicating either that the HHH was the cause of the accident, just that you had mentioned there was a group run in the area.

However, it doesn't help when they put up arrows on the incorrect side of the path, as well as a turn point. Below images captured last night near Powis St.

Yeah no complaints about them, generally seemed to all be well lit, light coloured clothing, and called down the line of bike approaching. Until now I never heard of them nor noticed the chalk markings. Like colony boats on the horizon to my native eyes =P

+ 1 Have been forced into the dirt when heading south by a couple of northbound cyclists who felt riding at speed and cutting the corner there was smart

Came across this on the ride in this morning, exactly at the location of the accident:


Didn't notice it on the way home last night, but then again it was dark, there are no lights in the area, and I was riding on the side which was clear.

Cleaned it up as best as I could, and reported the area/issue to the City of Stirling. The first photo you can see that dog-leg of a bend, and the main PSP continues to the left, not the one going straight on.

Whist speaking about this area, still waiting for the direction sign to be corrected, reported by NeatStreets Jan-2012.

Local kids building a cubby, there was an other crate up the tree.

Couple of notices put up at the location.


Haven't heard back from the City of Stirling, will send them a follow up e-mail including one of these images as a reminder.

Two years later, and the area has started to be cleared.


There are several grass trees re-located to the park area.

Hopefully this is to remove that poor join/corner from the PSP to the 'shared path', and to continue over Excalibur Way.

Hi all,

I can advise that works are due to commence this week to provide an effective and much improved solution.

A joint project, between the City of Stirling and Main Roads WA, will see the PSP reconstructed, between the pedestrian footbridge over the freeway and Excalibur Way, close to the freeway fence which is why some vegetation and trees are being removed, while a new replacement parallel path will be constructed within the grassed area of the park. A landscaping buffer will be between.

Whilst still within the park, this will separate the fast PSP from the pedestrians and children in the park and remove the unsafe Y Intersection.

Diversions will be in place until 20 June 2014, while the works are underway. See:

CityWomble, this is good news.

Will this also include installing cycle lanes on Excalibur Way? There are a number of cyclists who exit the PSP, who through their own choice, fail to slow down. Excalibur Way is not a very busy street, and my estimates are around 99% of the time I don't see a moving motorists vehicle on it. It is that 1% when you do, and I get that 'brown trouser feeling' when I observe cyclists exiting off the PSP onto the road, in particular the northern end. Ironically, I'm that 'vehicle' as I don't use the northern section of the PSP as I feel it is too narrow, and get onto the PSP at Excalibur Way, so I weekly see cyclists exiting the PSP onto Excalibur Way and they have not noticed me or think it is 'OK' to exit. By installing cycle lanes on Excalibur Way, there is that visual barrier between the PSP and the road.

In addition, as this is a modification to the PSP, will Main Roads be installed overhead lights, as from Karrinyup Rd all the way pass this point, there is no overhead lights. Given that this section is being modified, as well as further south at Gribble Rd, hopefully lighting will be installed as part of these improvements.

Thanks for the update Citywomble. This is good news indeed and having experienced a northbound cyclist putting in me the dirt at the Y junction I for one will appreciate the re-alignment.

I do echo Roland's comments as well and assume that Main Roads will apply its own guidelines in respect to lighting.

Any chance they can cut down the taller trees that the Kamikazee magpies lurk in while they are at it (still got a damaged shoulder 6 months after being attacked near there)

The City of Stirling are completing works on the PSP near Exaclibur Way, Carine. The path will be closed between the hours of 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, with detours in place.

Not a big issue, and seeing roads that I haven't seen before.

Well that explains that On my ride home yesterday (~3:50pm) northbound I saw the signs up but the path wasn't closed, whereas this morning when I went past (just before 7am) the path was closed and myself and some other commuters had to take the detour. Good to see though, that particular path intersection is a shocker. No close calls (yet) personally, but every time I ride it I feel the potential for bad things to occur.

Got lost on my trip in this morning (travelling South). I wasn't the only one.

It didn't help that this was installed on the entrance to the PSP at the south end:


My route around this diversion is (when travelling south):
PSP off at Excalibur Way - turn right
First turn left - Tresise St
Follow Tresise St until the end (intersection of Camelot St) - turn left
Look out for the 'Shared Path Closed' sign - ignore, as this is your entrance back onto the PSP

I wish I had seen this post before I left home at 6am this morning as I did exactly the same thing and there were others lost too. So much for only being closed from 7am - it was closed at 6.30 and looked like it was a 24 hour a day closure. Then there are signs telling you to divert away from the PSP but nothing to tell you how to get back on it. I tried several side roads until going down Camelot St (got caught out by a fast left hander and almost lost it) to a dead end. It was only when retracing my route I saw the "Share Path Closed sign" and in desperation rode down that way to look for clues, and this sign was ironically where to rejoin the path (with a hairpin right turn).

Got caught out last night (circa 6) thinking the path will be open after hours. Permanently blocked off with lots of work done removing the existing path. Simply rode across the grass and continued on my merry way. Judging by the tyre tracks in the grass I wasn't the only one. This morning commuted back streets to Karrinyup Road, rejoining the PSP there instead (one of my regular alternative routes).

From what I saw last night the left turn off the PSP is still open so you can access the overpass and Guinevere Street.

Above statement retracted, on Friday the PSP was blocked back at the top of the hill at the diversion exit.
