Lighthouse to Lighthouse

Postby RobertFrith » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:33 pm

Hey,
I was alerted to this by Declan who came by my office this arvo to talk L'Eroica; he's doing it this year, I did it last year. There's a vintage bike component to the ride too. I reckon I'm in...
from the website: "From the Naturaliste Lighthouse on the Northern tip of the Cape riding 120km to the Leeuwin Lighthouse on the Southern tip, Lighthouse to Lighthouse promises to be one of the most scenically spectacular rides on the Australian Cycling Calender.
Sunday October 14th 2012 Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse"

Declan told me Nov 5th though... I'll email the contact and report back, however if there's a BNA'er in the know, spill.

Caves Road? Narrow, treelined with farmer's utes and post-wine tasting traffic hurtling along at 80kph.

Sounds damn frightening! Are they planning road closures or some significant traffic calming?

From the website:

Road Rules

No roads will be closed for this event, normal road conditions and rules will apply. Marshalls will be placed at turns onto and off of Caves Road with the specific purpose of directing cyclists. Please observe and obey these marshalls.

I'd be more concerned about the wind than the traffic.

Visualise the Tambourine mountain climb, flattened out a bit, stretched to 100km, with 80kph limits and with Very Large Trees in the verge. Add wineries to the mix and voila!

I'm a former Perth resident, and familiar with the area. Caves Road is as you describe near Margaret River, but as I recall further south there are sections which are exposed and can be very windy, and the section out to the Cape Leeuwin could be diabolical.

Agreed - there's a front coming through right now - current observations are 60kph with gusts to 80kph. And the fun's barely started....
