Motorcycles in South St bus/cycle lane?

Postby stealthbike » Mon Dec 09, 2013 12:22 pm

An article on Perth Now suggests that Troy Buswell is considering allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes to ease traffic congestion. http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/road-safety-council-backs-calls-for-motorcyclists-to-use-bus-lanes/story-fnhocxo3-1226777786942
The Kwinana Freeway and South St are suggested for a six month trial. I have no problem with Kwinana Freeway but certainly have issue with South St, as it is not solely a bus lane. It is a bus and bicycle lane. If motorcycles start using this lane, it will be less safe for cyclists and defeat the point of having it. It is bad enough now with motorists being lazy/ignorant and using it. How can a lane that allows buses and motorcycles be safe for cyclists?

Is that the congestion that was caused by putting in.. errr.. dedicated bus lanes..

I personally haven't plucked up courage to ride my bike in the South Street bike/bus lane.. I just don't see mixing the most vulnerable traffic with the least caring as a good mix.. May as well allow "B" Double/Bike lanes. But I'm sure the responsible authority got kudos for putting in some more great cycling infrastructure..

I'd rather share the road with motorbikes - the riders have greater road sense than most others - they face similar issues to cyclists.. don't see them causing congestion, or how they could benefit from opening the lane to them though.

Maybe Mr Buswell is planning to ride his motorbike to work.

Bus lanes in nsw allow bikes and motos to share by default. Generally works well. The motos are more of an issue than the buses as they cut much closer. Govt bus drivers as a whole are pretty professional and exceptions are rare.

Sharing with buses is far preferable to sharing with general traffic imo.

I have no problems with sharing with motorcycles, I don't think they would cause any issues for cyclists. I do use the South Street bus/cycle lane but will only do so before 6am (when it actually isn't a bus/cycle lane) I time it so I rarely get passed by buses. Some bus drivers are great, others not so great and I've had a few scares along there when they try to squeeze by.
