Hi,

Doable, but not safe - I have met cyclists coming up (on my way down) a couple of times and had a very close call on one occasion.

Harden up and ride the hill up

Couldn't agree more! Had close calls with riders heading up the hill 2 or 3 abreast on a narrow road with limited sight lines.

Paulz, It might be abit safer in the future if the Shire carry out the proposed recommendations
Check this out: www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/.../FINAL-Zig-Z ... tion-Plan. .
If they stop vehicle access on the lower section, that would be great.
Unfortunately, you cant stop some idiot cyclists riding 3 abreast or racing downhill around blind corners.

Is it safe to climb on zig zag scenic drive kalamunda?

Providing you are on foot then yes, just beware of oncoming cars and bikes :)
On a bike, no. That's why it's been made one way, unlike a pedestrian you can't just step aside onto the verge or short cut at the bends.

What I did, it's going down the hill and climb up back via kalamunda road, because I don't feel safe doing it, it's so narrow, just in case there's a car from the top of the hill going down, there's no space for a bike hiding....

I rode down last week and caught up with two guys behind a car also going down, they asked which way was it one way! (you would think they would know that before riding it).

Anyway the driver pulled over at a safe spot to let us pass and at the next bend a cyclist was coming up.

I don't think the driver would have been impressed after stopping to let us pass and then seeing a rider coming up the wrong way.

I would be pissed off if driving down there if a rider(s) were coming the other way.
If we want respect on the roads we need to show some as well.

cheers

Its more likely the driver was pissed off with you speeding down the zig zag. Slow down and enjoy the view :!:
The zig zag isn't designed for speed.
Speedsters can always take Gooseberry Hill Road if they are in a hurry.

Zues really,
Who said I was speeding?. I don't understand how you can make this assumption?
The driver was cruising down very slowly he was not in anyway annoyed by us.
He may have been sightseeing going down with the slow speed he was traveling.

Anyway I think it would be great if all cyclists that use the zig zag respond to the Kalamunda feedback form. Closing the lower section of the zig zag to motorists would be great for all cyclists fast or slow.

I have driven the zigzags many times and have never seen any conflict between motorists and cyclists so why would closing the lower section to motorists be of benefit to cyclists?

blkmcs in answer:
If it becomes a no-go area for cars then Shire could paint a white line down the middle and allow cyclists to ride up the zig-zag. If they partition the road it would be safer for cyclists and walkers (provided you don't have too many Sambo3 types).
Likely to stop problems such as damage to vegetation by bush bashing - there has been more of this happening recently.
Less broken glass on road and take-away trash. You should see how much trash is exposed after a fire!!!

Why don't just leave it as it is, so everybody can enjoy ( car, bicycle, motorbikes etc ) the nice scenic drive down the zig zag.

I wonder what cyclist that use the zig zag to get up to Kalamunda would say, when they would come up against a car driver on the way down.

If it is one way, that means one way for everybody.

Here's the actual link to the Shire of Kalamunda Survey Page; Zig-Zag Scenic Drive: Have Your Say.

The organisers ask that before you complete the survey you have a read (or at least a good skim) of this : Zig-Zag Scenic Drive : Discussion Paper On Options & Possibilities (PDF Link)

Just doing my bit to help curb further aimless blather on here ;) Sheesh.. we might as well be on Facebook with all the teenagers and bored housewives the way some of you guys carry on together :P

I reckon it's safer if this road is for walking and cycling only, as a tourist sight seeing, put some kind a pole as a blocker so big vehicle can't go in....

Spent my first 25yrs in Gooseberry Hill, 3 training/racing and never once rode up the zig zag, and can't remember ever riding down.......to much fun overtaking cars down Gooseberry hill :D . Would be really disappointed if cars were ever banned from the zig zag. We drive the kids down at least once a month on return from grandads/nanna's house in the evening......Its one of Perth highlights. Bring on the annual events that close the drive for the day like Targa West, Shire Market walk, Bike race etc, but to close it for a few 'soft' bike riders  would be a real shame

abit risky overtaking cars down Gooseberry Hill isn't it, they have a big power and big body, compare to us, only a leg and small bike...hehe...
it's better on walking or riding a bicycle enjoying zig zag than driving, the space is small for car....and can stop only at the hair pin....
but everyone has his own opinion...so be it...
