That is an alfresco area that is being built at the front of the perth arena.

Go figure? Another bar.... right next to a cyclepath? What could possibly go wrong?

Checked in again with Tenders WA and the contract to replace the faulty glass at the Arena has still not been awarded (tenders closed 4 weeks ago).

Word on the grapevine is that the current N-S route over the railway tunnel will be closing in December when King St is connected through to Roe St so everyone is going to have to find a new route through the Perth Citylink construction area when this happens with even less chance that it is reasonably segregated from pedestrians.

And on and on and on it goes:
https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wa/rev ... b88699372z
A REVIEW has been launched into the risk of glass at some of Perth’s elite sports venues “spontaneously” exploding.

VenuesWest became aware of the danger when a glass panel broke at Perth Arena late last year and tests confirmed a defect known as nickel sulphide inclusions.

VenuesWest board minutes obtained by The Sunday Times show glazing works to fix the Perth Arena problem were carried out in the first half of 2017.

The documents show half of the project was completed before advice revealed the solution would not work.

A tender for glass replacement was unsuccessful in September and a revised tender was released this month.
Still no fix in sight...

This is closed now. It took me by surprise when I fronted the crossing from the Roe St side last week. On the upside the Roes St path now continues all the way to the subway.

Also, in the past few weeks (maybe longer) there are now 'cyclist dismount' signs on the front Perth Arena path. This is while the rear path is in its second continuous year of closure due to falling glass with no work done yet to fix it.

Given how much of a PITA it is to walk in in SPD-SLs for anymore than a few steps, the lower section should say "Walk Safely".

The whole situation is a mess, particularly when there are events on a weeknight evening.

I followed up with City of Perth on the dismount signs on Wellington St and they say the signs should no longer be in place and that the City's traffic engineer (who approved the use of the signs) has been made aware that with the closure of the northern path it is inappropriate to simply close the southern path to cyclists without additional measures (like a signed detour).

I won't be down that way again until next Monday at the earliest but if someone confirms that the dismount signs are still in place I can pass on a request for a site audit.

Went through the area the morning, no dismount signs.

It now matches the no closed signs, please use alternative route, on the north side of the stadium.

There was a van parked in front of the Northern path this morning where it's closed off, and about 50m down the closed path was a cherry picker that appeared to be examining or working on some of the panels.

Fingers crossed.

Checking Tenders WA there is still no contract in place for their second attempt at getting the glass fixed. Submissions closed the 18th of January (good luck getting responses in the first half of January as the building industry closes) so, if they are actually going to award a contract this time, it should happen this month.

I noticed on the bus the other day that the Eastern end closure has been reinforced and heavily fortified. So either something is happening or they are anticipating a longer closure.

That is a very large wall now installed, including an electronic door.

Seems a tad over the top when the priority should be to fix the glass and reopen the PSP.

This, based on off-the-record conversations. But it remains heresay. The official response is that, as it's private land, we don't have to tell you anything.

BTW Western end has had a similar treatment.

And don't forget the Riverside PSP underpass, closed when they built the Mandurah train line. Still has a massive steel gate preventing access.

Probably deserves its own thread but was this meant to be re-openned?

Don't know, but why still have the shared path running from mounts bay road, right to the steel door? From memory, it was only around 2 years ago the section near mounts bay road was converted to a garden bed, the rest is still there.

If the section behind the arena, was not meant to be ridden on, why was cycling signs installed on the path?

You're presuming that Perth Arena management and the DoT are of a like mind on this subject.

For Perth Arena the path is: a place where the public can injure themselves and/or cause damage the building.

And that's limiting myself to the rational excuses

3M sounds like a pane, but due to economy of scale it is only a few dollars per mullion.

I'm just glad to see this is finally moving forward. It's been four years so far.
But, amortise the $2.75M over, say six years and it's only $450,000 a year. Same magnitude as the CEO's salary, I'm sure

Almost $3 million of taxpayers’ money will be spent replacing glass at Perth Arena
Wouldn't this normally be covered by the builders warranty. The Arena opened Nov-2012, this thread started Mar-2014, when the Arena was less than 18 months old.

Why is our tax money being used to correct this issue?

Interesting question: If the "builder" is still exists (and is solvent) I'm sure they'll be stating that the claim was lodged too late. Or something similar, possibly correctly. In which case the owner likely will need to fix the building before suing for the now-established damages in a civil claim.

Personally, I'm still flabbergasted that the operators haven't been asked (forced) to reopen the path under the protection of something similar to what's out the front of Bondy's tower. Which has a similar problem with glass falling out of the sky (from much higher too)

As per the Auditor General's Report the Arena Contract was totally mismanaged to the account of $320M+ worth of variations on a $160M initial contract value including a 3 year delay to completion due to Government mismanagement (primarily due to negotiating from a design and construct contract to a construction only contract with the Gov taking all liability for design changes, the Gov kept no written records of these negotiations).

Given the history of the contract and the incompetent management it wouldn't surprise me if the glass panels were provided in accordance with the design and the design specified sub-standard panels.

When it comes down to it this extra glass replacement work is less than 1% of all the other overruns so it isn't particularly consequential.

Hopefully good news - a large EWP (cherry picker) parked behind the Perth Arena last night ( Friday 1st June)
