Now is the time to drag your bike out and get back into cycling. Will Podmore from Jet Cycles (2280A Albany Highway Gosnells, just past Dorothy Street Lights and Hungry Jacks) is once again providing half price bike services. Just mention GO BUG and this email when you book your bike in to be serviced. Call Jet Cycles on 9398 2359 - drop your bike down even while it is still raining and beat the spring cycling rush.
Do go for a ride this long weekend - when the sun comes out - try the leisurely rivers ride - watch out for pedestrians and cyclists coming the other way as this path gets busy on beautiful spring days http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Tr ... and-rivers
Join the informal GO BUG that meets each Saturday at 8.30am at Baileys Coffee and Cream near the Agonis Clock Tower, 2232 Albany Highway in Gosnells. Cyclists of all abilities are welcome. Bring a friend. Just turn up and go for a ride. Set your own limits and come back to the coffee shop when you have had enough. There is no pressure to keep up with the group. If they go too fast for you, let them know and organise in advance for meeting points or just letting them know that you are having a rest or returning. By organising to meet someone at the cafe for a ride, you increase the size of the group and also have someone you know to ride with, until you get to know others in the group. Having a larger group means more chance of someone to ride with, when others have commitments they can't avoid, are on holidays/sick or have an injury stopping them cycling for a while.
We are looking at doing some more bike sessions for less experienced or "rusty riders". We are also looking at holding some bike maintenance sessions so that you learn more about maintaining your bike. Let me know if you are interested in assisting or attending.
Be part of the "Inaugural Golden Spokes" cycling day at Champion Lakes Armadale on Sunday 26 October 2008 - suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Promote cycling by entering the 5km, 10km social family rides or the 32 and 76 km longer rides. All entrants have a chance to win some great prizes. Volunteer to assist on the day or come and watch. Promote the event to any cyclists you know. Please also encourage family groups to attend or even participate so that the event happens every year and encourages more children and families to cycle. It is great that a large community cycle event has been organised south of the river, in our general area. Visit http://www.goldenspokes.com/ for more information.
Volunteers are needed for this event to fill 100 marshalling roles. Volunteers will receive a pewter medallion, polo shirt, hat and free breakfast on the day.
I will be a marshall on the day and many GO BUG members have said they will be riding on the day - in the various events. We have been given permission to distribute flyers to interested people on the day to promote GO BUG. Let me know if you are interested in doing this.
The fun day includes short rides for recreational cyclists and family groups and the route is on a path around the lake for the short rides and a closed road circuit for the longer rides. Students from your school could wear tee-shirts to promote the schools involvement. A great day has been planned with many events starting with a closed road circuit open cycle race (our local "tour de France"), followed by the public participation rides. Other activities include dragon boat races, kayaking and rowing.
Make up a team and register for the Cycle instead in spring Challenge.
Details of the Challenge are on the website. Don’t miss out on the fun, organise your teams and enter now. It is easy to enter at the website: http://www.cycleinsteadinspring.com.au/ Late entries are welcome to this 6 week cycle challenge and it is a good way to build up your fitness and the number of cyclists riding to work for the National Ride to Work Day on 15 October. Teams can be of any number of cyclists (3 is ideal, but can be more or less and grow in size during the 6 week challenge).
COST: Free Entry. Get fit, healthier and wealthier. Keep cars off the road and keep the air clean. Enjoy Perth’s great Spring weather as you cycle more.
