Events in WA - where do I find them

Postby paul85 » Sat Dec 09, 2017 5:27 pm

Just wondering there seems to be a huge growth in Fondo's over east ie Bowral, Noosa, Clare, Orange B2B, Is there anything happening in per bar 3 dams and Kala 100?

The cycle sportif series seems to have disappeared and anything I do find has very poor websites or is cancelled? Any suggestions would be great?

7 January Tour of Jarrahdale https://www.facebook.com/events/1661406097485336/
For more check out Perth Intergrated Health Cycling Group https://www.facebook.com/pg/Perth-Integ ... 18/events/

Not involved at all, I am just on their mailing list. I don't do Sportifs, I race, and I get to choose from a lot of sites (not linking, too lazy and risk of getting tagged as spam), PDCC, WCMCC, ATTA, Roues Chaudes CC, SWCC, The Ring Criterium Series.

thanks for that, I sign-up to the kala 100. Nick would love to race but I think I need a bit more training. Will check out the Ring Crit tomorrow morning however as a spectator.

Sorry about the delay in replying.

You do not need more training to start racing, start at what ever level of fitness you have. You will just start in a lower grade and build up your fitness and racecraft and go up grades.

So where to start racing? I assume the 85 in your handle, means born in 1985, which is too young for the vets (West Coast Masters) Nov 2019, you will qualify.

The Ring Crit series will be a baptism of fire for a novice racer. Unless you happen to an E grade man, C or D grade women or under 13.

Assuming mid thirties, moderate level of fitness and limited racing/fast bunch riding experience, you will probably start in D grade, or C if you look really fit.

Choices:

PDDC criteriums - About every second Sunday in Rockingham or Pinjarra, About 15 riders in D grade.

Midweek mayhem - Midvale, I live in Kwinana, so yet to race one. Closed circuit, lower numbers than the ring or PDCC crit.

SWCC criteriums - Straham just south of Bunbury, Friday afternoons once a month. You will race C, it is the lowest grade they have got, with about 10 others.

Hi Nick

Could you give some more information about the Masters events ? I have come from a football (not afl) background and noticed the Masters leagues to be a bit less aggressive than the open. Can the same be said about this Masters ?

I am overweight and not the strongest cyclist, but would love to test myself at something competitive. Is there something you suggest as a good starting point ?

Thanks a heap for the advice!

It really depends on who is racing In my experience racing C & D grade, the numbers, the experience of the riders, the course and other factors like the weather.
Open races like the Ring tend to be the scariest, larger numbers, less experienced riders
West Coast Masters (WCMCC), riders tend to be older, but it is a mix, those have been racing 30+ years and people new to the sport. You can get bad behaviour from both. As there is prize money on the line, sprints can be a little hairy.
Peel (PDCC) club races, numbers generally lower than WCMCC and no prize money on the line, so a little more laid back but not always. Real mixes of age and experience.

It is criterium season, but do not let that hold you back. You only suffer for 30 minutes instead of 90 for a road race.

Depending where you live, is were to start.

North of the river, unless you are willing to travel to Rockingham every week instead of once a month, your choice is WCMCC. Just download the trial rider form http://www.wcmasterscycling.asn.au/AVCC ... e_Form.pdf fill it in, front up with $25 at 7:30 on race day and race. All the details here http://www.wcmasterscycling.asn.au

South of the river, your choice of WCMCC or PDCC. Main difference for an over 35 racer, WCMCC races every week, spread around the metro area. PDCC do races most weeks in the Peel Region (Kwinana, Rockingham, Serpentine, Mandurah).

There are other differences CA vs AVCC licence, cost CA around $250, AVCC $155, but you need CA licence to open events like the Ring etc, but lets not worry about this, it is about getting you started in racing, once you get the racing bug you will end up with both.

So check the club calendars see what suits you. http://pdcc.asn.au/racing/schedule/ http://www.wcmasterscycling.asn.au/cale ... lendar.htm

PDCC Get a 3 day licence https://eventdesq.sportstg.com/index.cf ... sqID=14967 before you race, it is far cheaper than a one day licence and you can get the cost of a 3 day licence rebated off a full licence. Front up at 8:05 on race day with $25.

You will be graded on race day, the handicapper will grade you based on your age, perceived level of fitness and any other information you can give them. ie if you ride with somebody who races. You will either end up in C grade if you look fit, D if not, you need to be over 70 or very overweight to get into E.

There is nothing stopping you doing trial with WCMCC, 3 day licence with PDCC, then picking which club suits you best.

If you do live south of Mandurah, the SWCC (South West Cycle Club) monthly late afternoon friday crit, would be a great place to start. Contact SWCC for details http://www.southwestcycleclub.com.au/

If you were looking for a good race to start, 4th February WCMCC are holding a road race at Herne Hill.

A road race is less daunting place to start than a criterium.

With WCMCC C or D grade (your most likely place to start), a road race is fast (40 or 50km) group ride with a bunch sprint at the end.

If you are feeling strong get into the first half dozen riders when you turn on William Road for the last time. Otherwise sit back, watch and learn.

Did you end up doing the Blackwood Tour? How does it compare to the 3 Dams?

I'll probably sign up for the 3 Dams again for 2019 as it's easy to organise, but might put the Blackwood Tour on my "to do" list of future rides. The distance and elevation gain seem similar, just got to factor in 3 hours of driving each way. Might have to plan a family long weekend.

No never did this year.... new job and it all got way way too hard. Have ridden so little because of work may not even do 3 dams next year.
