Kep Track - Anyone been up this spring?

Postby paul85 » Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:26 pm

I am considering the train to Northam and a ride back. Has anyone been on the trail lately? What the long grass situation like, I know there is a patch getting up near Northam and my fear of snakes  will put me right off riding in any long grass...

Can confirm no long grass west of Bakers Hill, Few bobtails..... . Spencers Brook Road is a nice ride out of Northam and brings you back to GWHwy/Kep track a few ks East of Bakers Hill as an option if you hit long grass around Northam.

We did Mundaring to just before Clackline and back around 3 weeks ago, didn't see a single snake. We met a group of 40 riders who left from Northam, no reports of snakes from them either.

If you do leave from Northam avoid the section running next to Avon River, instead stick to Mitchell Ave, and join the Kep track at Gratte St. Have been caught out twice hitting large volumes of cultrop type prickles and spending a lot of time pulling them out and replacing tubes. Last ride to Northam and back (Apr-2018) the record was around 20 front tyre and 15 rear tyre, and at that time, no store in Northam to purchase spare tubes.

I was probably in the group Roland encountered - CanTeen ride to Northam on the Saturday and back on the Sunday. 220km weekend for me, it was tough!

We didn't have any problems with grass, snakes or caltrops thankfully.

Good guess, will you be riding tomorrow at the Canteen Ride?

Sadly I've not ridden since the Southern Peaks MTB race last weekend, where I crashed and hurt a couple of ribs. Thankfully adrenaline was an effective pain relief and I managed to finish in the top 10! As of this morning I'm still struggling to turn the steering wheel in my car :(

Just got back from the LifeCycle for Canteen ride from Walpole to Albany on basically the Munda Biddi. Record was 3 snakes on one day, more than I would normally see in 2 years. Great ride.
