Pedal power: Darwin council workers get new transport option

Postby Aushiker » Wed Jun 17, 2009 2:35 pm

G'day
Darwin City Council workers now have the option of riding bicycles to meetings instead of driving council vehicles.

The chief executive, Brendan Dowd, says the council has purchased six bikes for staff to use if they choose to.

He says all staff are welcome to use the bicycles, but they will probably mostly be used by regulatory service officers.

"I don't think [we] will be worrying too much about the sweat," Mr Dowd said.

"It will be more a case of the advantages we can get from getting out and about, some exercise, some fresh air and of course reducing greenhouse gas emissions through some degree of reduced usage of motor vehicles."
