I am a local from Adelaide and have never visited Kangaroo Island. In discussion today at lunch Kangaroo Island came up and I came up with the idea of cycling Kangaroo Island solo, maybe next year for 10 days or so.
I have never done any touring stuff as yet, but thought maybe this would be a good start. I did a search for touring Kangaroo Island, but didn't find any other topics. Has anyone cycled Kangaroo Island? Is it a good start for a first tour? Can I do it on a hybrid bike?
I look forward to your advice.
btw I currently ride 24k return to work each day, but am looking at incorporating long rides into my weekends to prepare physically if I do decide to go ahead with it.
KI would be a great place to start some touring. The distances between towns is not great, and the roads are pretty quiet. You will have no trouble with a hybrid bike unless you go on some of the dirt roads when they are wer, the mud becomes quite thick at sticky. Most of the attractions are via sealed roads.
Some of the roads are quite narrow, so you'll need to be aware that it may be difficult for cars and buses to pass. Buy the brightest rear (red) light you can find and use it during the day, it makes a difference.
Having been there a few times, the most interesting and remote regions are IMHO the west and south coasts. Most of the island is dead flat although small areas of hiily country exist. Choose your season carefully, KI can be very hot and dusty during the summer.
You haven't said whether you'll be camping or stayiong in pubs etc, that probably makes a difference to where you go. Good luck, and post a report for others to read.
if you want some company i'd join ya! sealed roads only though. and we would have to ride from Adelaide to Cape Jervis.
If only i could find a Miniature Mongolian Swamp Donkey!

oh & a sweet Dragster...
There are not many pubs on K.I. You might want to include farmstays etc as well.
The roads are pretty good with the main problem for any dirt roads being corrugations brought on by 4WD's and Minibuses.
I spent a couple of days on K.I. earlier this year. It was the first time for about 20 years, and I am pleased to say that its not much different from then (no hi-rise resorts on the ocean front etc).
For one persons account of a K.I. tour visit http:www.adelaidetouringcyclists.org/kangaroo_island.htm
I think I may have stuffed up that link. Oh well I'll try again
