I have been biking for 5 years (I am now 53 yrs old) and with a daily commute in sydney of 40km per day, 6 days per week, I have got quite fit.
In october 2007, I did a solo trip from sydney to melbourne along the coast in 6 days, 1000km, and that was OK.
In october 2008, I did a solo trip from sydney to adelaide thru wagga and swan hill, it took 8 days, 1600km, and that was hard work, but went OK.
I am planning a trip on bikely for october this year from sydney to cairns in perhaps 13 days. The route to brisbane along the coast (newcastle, taree, coffs, kyogle, brisbane in 5 days) seems ok, with lots of bike path on the gold coast.
I am rather worried what to do from brisbane north; it's a long way and I really don't know any of the roads along there. Does the bruce highway have a shoulder? should I do sections inland? Is 220 km a day for 8 days after biking to brisbane too ambitious?
I would appreciate some views from the more experienced riders/tourers, especially if you have done such a route.

I did my melbourne trip on a Specialised Sequoia; my adelaide trip on a Specialised Sworks - great touring bikes, strong, fast and ultracomfortable. I have 3l of water on the frame and a small pack on my back which contains: raincoat, spare shorts, rugby jersey, spare tires, pump etc and 2l of water, wallet, mobile and medicines - about 10kg.

I think you should definitely not cycle on the motorway which starts at Carseldine on the northern outskirts of brisbane and continues almost to Gympie.
To head north out of brisbane you could take the suburban train (caboolture line or ferny grove line)
Or you could explore routes which look promising on bikely.com, but try to avoid the main roads like Lutwyche Rd and Sandgate rd.
Once out of greater brisbane why not go to Noosa http://www.usmevents.com.au/century/maps.html
This was the route for the mass-participation ride last weekend, which i did not do myself but apparently was enjoyed by most.
I did a response to a similar posting about a month or 2 ago brisbane north maybe to Cairns
Theere i mentioned various ideas but my comments about maleny/montville/mapleton are probably a bit dubious as this stretch is seriously hilly and horribly busy on weekends especially.

Eh, Lutwyche Rd isn't that bad and Sandgate Rd even has bike lanes, what sort of wuss are you
However, I would try to avoid the bruce highway out of brisbane, there's the old highway which runs through Beerwah, that'd be a better one to follow on the way out. The bruce highway might be ok further up, I don't know, I don't get up north much.
