I was thinking more like this...my custom surfboard is a foot shorter than the one in this pic & lighter too. I could also carry my wetsuit & other gear in the trailer.

I just found out I'll be getting a good tax return & now thinking of maybe getting a Rohloff drive train...any suggestions where I can get a reasonably priced one in Melb?

Thanks rifraf, I basically contacted SJS and they advised me what I needed after I described what I wanted. I did stuff the wiring up initially, cracked the plastic on the wiring edge so it kept shorting but fixed pretty quickly.

I wanted to use the Troll for commuting too and was sick of replacing batteries...

I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them over the past couple of years and they've always been very good to deal with. When I ordered the hub before Christmas it got caught up in the Christmas mail and the heavy European snowfalls and did not arrive until later in Jan. I contacted them re. the situation and they were quite helpful.

I bought the 500/14 CC OEM EX - meaning it has a QR axle, a torque plate to suit OEM drop-outs and an external gear box. This should all work on your Troll as well. I must admit though, after getting it set up I had a rethink about the value of my rear wheel and replaced the QR with Pitlock security skewers. There were no extras otherwise that I needed to get for the hub. Oh, I have bought a Rohloff sprocket tool (but won't neeed it for a while) and as the hub was from a German store the manual was in German. The English manual (in PDF) can be downloaded for free from the Rohloff website.

Yes, I bought some heavy duty Rigida Andra 30 CSS rims in 32 hole.


BTW, I was not charged any GST on the hub, even though it was just over the $1000 threshold for imported goods .

I followed il Padrone as well. Exact same hub but mine was a little lower on costs thanks to the exchange rate at the time. I too didn't get stung for import duties or GST on this. Before I bought my Thorn, I was eyeballing the Surly Troll as well. It has the Rohloff dropouts so the OEM version of the rohloff will suit.

Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 CC EX OEM is approx $1042, you may have not taken off the german VAT on bike24 site.
Sure it's a gamble, I took it and got it through as they put shipping info in euro's.

I'm currently doing a retake of my commuter/tourer. It started life as a plain old Surly LHT



Whilst I has a couple of bikes off the road for rebuilds the Surly became my commuter. Surly LHT SS



It stayed this was for about 6 months. Now that I have my two speed up and running the Surly is under the knife.


Not really caring to much for this bike I didn't want to throw too much coin at it. I added a disk tab to the rear, fitted some disk forks and some soild 29er wheels. Gear is fairly simple. Alivio crank, x7 derailleurs 12-36 cassette. Liking the riser bar I replaced the shifters with sram attack grip shift, avid speed dial levers and fitted up some BB7's.

Yep that is a BBB Fuel Tank, had to get it on short notice and got it from Elite Racing Cycles. Worked beautiful to hold down a 1.5l bottle. Had to use a cool drink bottle due as opposed to a water bottle due to the neck design of them. Couldn't clamp around a water bottle neck, but easily around the slimmer cool drink bottle neck.
The pump on the seat tube is about to be removed and replaced with a Lezyne
Current saddle was an emergency swap. Had to have a saddle and that is my most comfortable/broken in brooks I have. Will be buying a black brooks for it down the track.

Looks great - I love yellow as a colour on a bike as it really sets off any chrome, polished alloy
and/or black really nicely.
